A room with a view, Corrèze in France

You have packed these newly purchased silk pyjamas. All you need is somewhere prestigious to show them off.

A Room with a view, perhaps?

Corrèze, Mercure Corrèze la Seniorie 4*

Located in the heart of the medieval village of Correze in the Dordogne valley, nothing destined this 19th-century girls-boarding-school to become a unique luxury hideaway. The views of the village down below are undeniably outstanding. Verdant scenery, granite houses nestled around a Carolingian church, dark grey slated roofs, the overall effect is of perfect harmony.

La Seniorie is a beautiful and impressive building restored to modern high specs with a team of extremely dedicated staff. The floor manager brings fresh flowers from her own garden. The director, Bertrand Clavel, told me that the team’s goal is to “provide quality through simplicity with an emphasis on personalisation”. It certainly works, as the first guest I met, was returning for the thirty-second time.

The rooms: The first thing I noticed, was the size of the bedroom, a London estate agent would fit a small flat inside it. The overall effect was “fusion” where modern fitting mixes with stylish classical furniture, apparent wooden beams, the bed was super comfortable and the bedsheets soft Egyptian cotton. The modern bathroom had all the luxuries toiletries you would wish for. A good selection of magazines and a very comprehensive guide of walks and places to discover are available in the bedrooms and in the restaurant. Every room has a different size, I had one of the largest but to be fair, they all are of good proportion, and offer the same high standard, neutral colours and beautiful views.

Additional: The Wi-Fi works well, in spite of walls fit for a castle. Did I mention, the pool table, the outdoor swimming pool, the tennis court and a breakfast terrace worthy of these silk PJ’s? The menus follows the same ethos as the rest, classical French cuisine, simply cooked. The steak is not to be missed as the area is famous for its light brown cows aptly named Limousines.

Conclusion: I liked La Seniorie very much and I would happily go back but luxury means different things to different people and this is especially true when considering high calibre hotels. I am afraid, I fell head over heels for another.

Uzerche, Hotel Joyet de Maubec 4*

Joyet de Maubec is a modern success story, born out of a passion for sharing the good things in life. When Daniel and Thierry decided to leave their high flying jobs behind and turn to the hotel business, their banker advised them to “forget about it”. Instead they forged ahead. They started renovations in 2013 and opened in June 2014. The couple has created a brand which offers their guests an authentic experience exclusive to their hotel. It didn’t take long for the world to clock in, already 26,000 people have had the pleasure to partake in this experience which scores an exceptional 9.6/10 on

The building is part of Urzeche history. In the 50th and the 60th it was the local girl school and it ended its public career as tax office, no wonder the locals were curious, if not suspicious to see what the hotel make over would do to it. But here everything is perfect. After 15 years spent traveling for work, the couple knew exactly what high-end hotels are about. Nothing was missing.

The rooms: The rooms are cosy, the sheets that of a 5*, I loved the walk-in shower with bespoke toiletries. This hotel is a recent member of the exclusive collection Chateaux & Hotels. It has 8 rooms only, 3 more are planned for next year. My room didn’t feel very large, but 18 square metres is largely enough space. There are 3 room categories in total ranging up to Junior Suite.

Additional: In the morning, there were fresh flowers and freshly squeezed orange juice on the breakfast table. No self-service here, breakfast is served at the table. I was gently but firmly told to stop fidgeting, relax and enjoy. This is a luxury break like no other.

Conclusion: La Correze is an area renown for its gastronomic excellence and outdoor sports. Do not miss the beautiful village of Collonges-la Rouge, Curemonte, the castle of Pompadour and the slate quarry of Travassac. A beautiful weekend getaway in a beautiful hotel, exuding effortless charm. Here you will find a room with a view, indeed.
