If you are always looking for that quirky little cafe where you can pull out your laptop, sip on that perfect cup of coffee and are surrounded by chitter chatter and the sweet smell of freshly baked treats, then this is a go-to.
I first stumbled upon this place when my friend and I were looking for a lunch spot in the upcoming and trendy area of Tiong Bahru with no time constraints. The café is located in a quiet spot on the Yong Siak Street that neighbours cool and quirky boutique shops and studios.
When entering the café you notice the open kitchen where everything is freshly made daily, and a little shop with unique little home scents, accessories as well a good selection of cookbooks and pantry delights. (I bought freshly made maple granola and it was delicious -I’m addicted).
Whilst our eyes were fixated on the assortment of cupcakes on either end of the counter, we ordered the House Super Salad and the Chicken Butternut Squash Rice Salad. It was presented in a recycled paper box and wooden cutlery; I quickly realized that this is part of their eco-friendly approach to the business. The food was fresh and exactly what we expected.
Once done with the healthy guilt free lunch, we couldn’t wait to sink our teeth into something sweet. Mainstay offerings included Strawberry White Chocolate, Cinnamon Brown Sugar, Milk Chocolate Banana, Red Velvet, Salted Caramel, Earl Grey Lavender. We chose the Dark Chocolate Ganache cupcake made of Valrhona dark chocolate sponge, smothered in bittersweet chocolate ganache and dipped in Valrhona cocoa nibs. This was delectable! The cupcake wasn’t too sweet and the crunchy cocoa nibs worked so well.
I would say big thumbs up to Plain Vanilla. The bakery takes pride in using some of the finest ingredients and you can taste the difference. It’s a great place to come alone or hangout with your friends. You won’t be disappointed.
