Suitcase Series: Elizabeth Scarlett in London

Elizabeth has built a leading British brand that is born out of a lust for travel (a girl after our own heart).

The Elizabeth Scarlett brand uses her signature hand painted designs to embroider beautifully modern and homely lifestyle products. Her delicate embroidery on soft fabrics pays homage to her textile and fine art background; her naturally scented candles, create an ambiance free from chemicals; and her pouches can be spotted all over Instagram and beyond. Elizabeth’s brand recently become the very first homewares brand to feature on ASOS, and is stocked in some of UK’s leading outlets including Fortnum & Mason, Amara Living, Graham & Green, Fenwick stores.

What is the first trip you remember taking?

A visit to my grandparent’s home, they called ‘The Little Pink House” in Port Grimaud, South of France. I’d remember playing in their garden, feeding bread to the fishes in the Port and jumping on and off the boats whilst being firmly buckled up in a lifejacket!

If you could sit next to anyone – dead or alive – on a long-haul flight, who would it be?

Frank Sinatra so he could sing me to sleep.

How do you recover from jet lag?

Exercise, lots of water and excitement for what the trip has in store. I have heard that if you stand barefoot, directly on the ground in a new country you can “earth” your body to the right time zone. I’ll be trying that next time!

Your flight’s delayed an hour and your phone’s out of battery. How do you pass the time?

I love to read, so if I have a good book with me I’m sorted. If not I’d try to meditate and find some stillness and peace.

Biggest lesson from your travels?

That we are very small and the world is very big which makes our day to day problems very small too.

Do you travel for food, leisure, culture or something else?

I travel for everything, I love seeing and learning about new things every day. I’m passionate about food, decor and nature so travelling around the world is a great source of inspiration.

Favourite Hotel?

The San Domenico Palace in Taormina, Sicily. It is absolutely stunning, with heavenly sea and Mount Etna views at every turn. You can eat breakfast and dinner under bougainvillea filled terrace and listen to classical jazz. We recently shot our SS18 Collection there, as I was inspired by the historical garden. The building used to be a Monastery back in the 15th century –it’s truly a spell cast by nature and man’s care with all my favourite plants.. monstera leaves, lavender, lemon trees and pomegranates!

British Airways of course!

What’s on your travel playlist?

My Spotify “magic” and “relax” playlists which include the soothing tones of D’Angelo, Joss Stone, Ella Fitzgerald and Bruno Major.
