Meet The Dream Swimsuit Maker: Alexandra Miro

Alexandra Miro is the self-confessed travel addict who launched her own swim label.

We’ve all had that frantic, last-minute search for ‘the’ swimsuit ahead of our vacation. You know, the one that not only sucks you in, but also pulls your entire suitcase together. The one that’s chic enough for a super-yacht, but comfy enough to laze in all day… So, what do you do if you just can’t find it? Make like Alexandra Miro and casually launch your own swim and resort label, aka Alexandra Miro. Read on for her travel musings (follow @alexandramiro for a serious dose of wanderlusting), plus her foolproof checklist for finding your perfect swimsuit. Yep, it does exist…

So, why did you decide to launch a swim line?

AM: I initially conceived the brand in my search to the find the ultimate one-piece – one that was high-fashion, but also seriously flattering. AM celebrates clean lines and bold designs to show the female form at its most powerful. I want to make women feel confident and empowered when they wear my pieces.

You launched in Spring 2017, why do you think AM’s taken off so quickly?

AM: We’ve very much built the brand on social media, using strong, powerful influencers (and not always fashion influencers) to spread our message. I’ve always stuck to a very recognisable aesthetic. I think both the swimsuits and resort wear have a very clear identity – bold, sculptural and playful. Up until now, the swimwear’s taken centre stage but upcoming collections feature more resort wear so that women can dress for their entire holiday.’

What are your key inspirations for the collections?

AM: Art, architecture and design very much influence my creative process. As an avid collector of art, I’ve always appreciated colour and form.

How important is travel to you?

AM: I’ve always been a complete travel addict! I love discovering new far-flung destinations. As a business, we’re now looking to expand into the US market so travel is key.

What’s been your dream destination? And what’s still on your bucket list?

AM: A trip to Botswana last year was life-changing. I also loved a recent trip to Palm Springs for the modernist architecture and design. The Maldives is still one destination I’ve always wanted to go to, but it’s never happened. Hopefully soon!

On to swimwear, what are your top tips for finding the perfect swimsuit?

AM: I have three tips when it comes to finding your perfect swimsuit. 1. Understand your body type and always accentuate your best parts. 2. You need to try on lots and lots of styles to understand what really works best for you. And most importantly, 3. Wear it with confidence, always.

Swimsuit, or bikini?

AM: For me, I will always opt for a one-piece as I love how it elongates the body and looks so chic and elegant.

What are your hero picks for this Summer 18 from Alexandra Miro?

AM: The Betty dress – it’s become our iconic piece as you can wear it over your swimwear or dress up in the evening with heels. Also, The Whitney is our newest swimsuit and it’s immensely flattering. Plus, tanning without the strap marks!

2017 – a year of incredible highs. Thank you to all this who have followed and supported over the past years I have loved connecting with people from all round the world. . . Wishing you all a happy, healthy and prosperous 2018 💋 . . #newyear #netaporter #grandhyatt #newyears

Besides AM, what other resort wear brands/designers usually make your packing list?

AM: I love Zimmerman, her aesthetic is very different, but I have a lot of admiration for how she’s grown her brand from swim/resort brand to bona fide ready-to-wear label. I also love Balmain, Missoni and Staud for vacations.

You love beauty, too. What would we find in your suitcase this summer?

AM: I’m currently obsessed with Oribe hair products. Skincare wise, I can’t live without Skinceuticals Glycolic 10 Renewal, and sun protection products from Heliocare. I’m never without factor 50.
