The Accessories Edit

Newsflash: accessories may be small, but they can make or break your vacation look…

Our advice? Leave behind the cumbersome, everyday pieces that don’t give you that packing buzz. Think of holidays as your hall pass to be more frivolous. Would you wear ‘that’ S/S18 Jacquemus gargantuan straw hat over your local park? Probably not. But on a beach in Tulum? Absolutely. And with Instagram evidence, too, obviously.

Just one look-at-me piece is all you need to pep up an otherwise low-key holiday look. Check out these suitcase extras that will make ALL the difference to your vacation vibe.

Just don’t wear them all at the same time…

Flat shoes don’t have to be boring. Get a holiday pair with some unexpected detail, a la Wang’s studded denim sliders. If you’re into added height with your shorts/skirts/maxis, go for a pair of heels that dictate your outfit. These 3.1 Phillip Lim’s and Malone Souliers are made for taxi nights. Attempt cobbled streets at your peril.

Ban boring neutral bags from your packing list. Vacations give you the chance to go bold with either: a) texture: see statement straw numbers from Nannacay, b) shape: check out Cult Gaia for arm candy with epic silhouettes; or c) prints: witness Versace’s big cat for a wild print you’ll probably get stopped about.

Your sunglasses probably work harder on holiday than any other time of year. Give the bland black shades a break for bold prints or bright colours. We love Saint Laurent’s Kate shades (no holiday blues here), and Le Specs Zephyr numbers – the monochromatic safari print will go with everything.

If you’re normally guilty of wearing the same go-to fine jewellery at home, go rogue on vacation. Statement pieces will not only elevate your outfit but also make your suntan pop. Mix it up with chunkier pieces with shots of brighter colour, like this bling from Marni, JW Anderson, and BaubleBar.

Your simple rule for headwear on holiday? The bigger the better – they’re like instant sun protection and hangover camouflage, combined. Win. See Maison Michel straw hat for instant shady status. Try customising a trusty sunhat with different ribbons if you really want to maximise your outfit coordination.

Not everyone loves a hat. Scarves are way more versatile given the fact you can wear the same silk scarf as a headscarf, belt, necktie or bag feature. We’re down with recycling. For vacation, you can’t beat a silk scarf in nautical colourways like red, white or blue. If you can’t justify the Dolce & Gabbana Majolica clothing price tags, this is an affordable way to work it.
