The Best Autumn Destinations

Crunchy leaves, hot chocolate, unfiltered sunsets, misty mornings, the smell of wood smoke…autumn is pretty enchanting when you think about it.

Across the world, summer greenery turns to flashes of red, purple and gold as nature winds down for the winter in a magical send off to the year. To celebrate, here are the destinations at their best in autumn…

Tokyo, Japan

Japan is spoilt for choice when it comes to seasonal splendour. In the spring there is the fairy-tale cherry blossom season, but in Autumn you have the equally spectacular ‘koyo’ season. ‘Koyo’ stands for changing leaves of autumn and sees the whole country transformed. Mountainsides, temple gardens and city parks turn to every shade of red, yellow and orange as Japanese acers and maple trees change colour from October until December.

Tuscany, Italy

Harvest season in Tuscany is not only striking to look at – blue skies and a vivid array of colours, from green to red and yellow – it’s also the best time of year to try fresh truffles, risotto ai porcini (the mushrooms are at their freshest), chestnuts and a glass of Chianti Classico at one of the many autumn wine festivals.

Namibia, Africa

Autumn is within Namibia’s dry season – meaning little to no rain, sunny weather and the time of year when animals congregate around waterholes and rivers for water (aka amazing opportunities to see wildlife such as zebra, elephants and giraffe up close).

Georgia, USA

The Blue Ridge Mountains in north Georgia offer one of the most colourful and longest running fall/autumn leaf seasons in the world. The best way to see the landscape is to drive along one of the scenic byways or hike up to the state’s highest point, Brasstown Bald, for incredible views of the mountains, which are swathed in red, yellow and gold.

Tel Aviv, Israel

Hiking, biking, apples and honey, autumn in Tel Aviv takes on its own kind of beauty. A cocktail culture as thriving as its foodie scene, an art scene showcasing the past and future and a beach to keep your summer tan – Tel Aviv is an expressive city that is ever-evolving and rich in diversity. Autumn sees a “sweet tourist” month when the air is full of festivities and the tourist crowds have left.

Toronto, Ontario

Embrace the dramatic transformation that autumn brings as Ontario transforms into a scene of reds, oranges and yellows. Feeling adventurous? Take a day trip from Toronto for deep forest hikes and quaint small towns. There’s no better way to see how the province transforms each autumn than by packing into a car and heading to nearby destinations that show off the beauty of the southern Ontario landscape.
