Suitcase Series: Andrea Cheong of The Haute Heel

From Time Out journalist in Singapore to one of the London Evening Standard’s Top 25 Influencers. Introducing Andrea Cheong of The Haute Heel.

She’s not a regular blogger. She says the things you were thinking but never dared to speak aloud, commenting on style, beauty, travel, discussing the burgeoning blogging industry, and her top tips on the latest treatments in aesthetics and luxury skincare.

What is the first trip you remember taking?

Long flights back to Singapore every holiday. And swimming with dolphins in Bintan.

If you could sit next to anyone – dead or alive – on a long-haul flight, who would it be?

Murakami but I’m not sure he’d want to talk about his work, I heard he’s super shy.

How do you recover from jet lag?

IV drips before the flight and rehydration salts during and after.

Your flight’s delayed an hour and your phone’s out of battery. How do you pass the time?

Buy a book or start a new article on my laptop, I write the most when I’m travelling.

Biggest lesson from your travels?

Use Instagram to create mood boards for content trips but don’t rely on them, social media is not an accurate portrayal of a lot of places! Then I educate myself about the history of a place for context. If you understand something the chances are you’ll appreciate it more.

Do you travel for food, leisure, culture or something else?

I travel for work – I shoot editorials and lifestyle content abroad as much as possible. My blog and Instagram angle is all about millennial luxury and what could be a better example than exploring the world?

Favourite Hotel? Why?

Rosewood in London, it’s just so romantic and they have live birds, a resident retriever and their bar is one of the best in the city. I also like Upper House in Hong Kong. But in general, I find that hotels in Asia are better in terms of service and room size.

Favourite airline?

Singapore Airlines, of course! I actually really like Cathay Pacific too, the food is pretty good.

What’s on your travel playlist?

Cigarettes After Sex, Blondie and Tame Impala.

Where next?

Cape Town!

What are your must-have travel picks?

Face mist for hot countries, always a red lipstick from Chanel or I Desire from Hourglass, I don’t mind hotel shampoos but it’s the bad conditioner that gets me, I decant Kerastase into a small bottle, and dry shampoos like Bumble and Bumble or Klorane. I’m high maintenance, I can’t go without check-in!

First thing that comes to your mind?

Hand-luggage essential?

Disinfectant and lipstick.

Packing: roll or fold?

Rubbish at both but fold.

Time killer on a long-haul flight?

Movies and melatonin

On-flight tipple of choice?

Champagne.

Bucket list top destination?

Honestly, anywhere! I want to join a seafood eating competition in Texas, Maldives, St Lucia, more of Japan, Gili Islands, Peru for the food, Cappadocia…

Best shopping gem found abroad?

Anything from a Japanese supermarket, they do instant ramen that tastes better than any restaurant in London.

Beach or City?

Probably city, as long as it’s hot.

Ultimate hideaway?

I love my condo in Singapore, just chilling on the balcony with my furkids and getting fresh coconuts from downstairs (there’s a mini mart in the complex).
