The Beauty Haul Diaries: Susanne Kaufmann

Susanne Kaufmann is the beauty guru combining skincare and spa life – and nailing it. This month saw her launch a new hotel concept – Hotel Post Bezau by Susanne Kaufmann – which is part retreat/part spa/part we-want-to-go-now-please.

“I’m passionate about beauty and I was very lucky to have founded Susanne Kaufmann skincare at the right time,” she says. “Now with the new hotel concept, I can combine 15 years of beauty experience and 25 years of hotel experience to create something new and special.”

Susanne’s always been a champion of clean beauty being powerful and the same applies to her travel regime of curated minis and takeaways (she’s in the carry-on suitcase camp, fyi).

Introducing the plane routine, jet lag tonics and giant-sized beauty exceptions that keep Susanne Kaufmann glowing on her vacations…

What are your must-do beauty rituals/treatments before you travel?

Before I travel, I try to have a bespoke treatment which focuses on different massage techniques – kind of like a workout for the face. I have a similar treatment for my body, too. Travelling is hard work on muscles, whether you’re sitting for hours in a car or a plane.

How do you adapt your beauty regime when you travel?

This is really dependent on my destination. When I travel to big cities, I take products for a double cleanse and ampoules from my Pollution Skin Defence System. When I go on family holidays, suncare is a priority for me.

What’s the best way to downsize your at-home beauty product haul for travel?

Most of the products I need come in a travel size and I take additional sachet samples. When I travel with my family, it’s exactly the opposite! I go for the largest sizes for body care as we use it as a family and the biggest size in face products as I love to use them several times a day to hydrate.

Do you prefer to pack travel minis or full-size beauty staples?

I prefer minis because I love to go on trips with carry-on luggage.

Do you have a regular plane beauty routine?

I use the Susanne Kaufmann Moisturizing Spray Harmonising to refresh, our Moisturizing Mask as a replacement for my day cream, the Eye Cream Line A (always), the Hand Spray Purif-I to disinfect, and then lip balm to prevent dry lips. I also regularly use our Leg and Vein Spray Cooling for tired, heavy feet.

How do you overcome jet-lag skin/eyes when you land?

If I’m trying to adapt quickly to the new time zone, I try to stay up until midnight. I always try to relax or sleep during the flight. My doctor, Dr. Brigitte Klett, who also runs the TCM Retreats at Hotel Post Bezau, gives me a soothing and sleeping tea. On the plane, I usually only order hot water. The Susanne Kaufmann Pillow Spray helps me drift off in my hotel room.

What’s been your favourite country to shop for home-grown beauty products?

Sweden.

Favourite vacation spa so far?

Villas Barrocal in Portugal. Not only because they carry our product, but also because I’m in love with the country. Treatments at the Susanne Kaufmann Spa are a must-do. I really enjoy the huge spa rooms – they’re stunning and very special.

So, what are your top skincare tips when travelling?

  1. Use the Lifting Mask from our anti-ageing line overnight as a thin layer to support the regeneration of the skin.
  2. Try to specifically include anti-pollution ingredients in your skincare routine if you’re travelling to big cities, such as New York or Hong Kong.
  3. A detox juice is not only good for the metabolism, but also for the skin. It’s also important to eat seasonal and locally – it’s great for the body, metabolism and thus, the skin.
  4. Sleep! Lots of sleep is so important for cell renewal so take advantage of lie-ins on vacation.
