The Beauty Haul Diaries: Gucci Westman

Skin guru to the Hollywood stars and supermodels, Gucci Westman was a make-up artist in demand for 20 years before launching her own namesake brand last year. Atelier Westman is all about a ‘second-skin approach’ to make-up – incidentally also the perfect vacation-ready look in our books.

“For me, makeup is more about enhancing a woman’s beauty as opposed to transforming her,” says Gucci. Whether it’s make-up or skincare, this New York-based MUA is also big on ‘clean’ beauty and plant-based actives – at home or away.

Gucci’s hacks for her beauty travels? Electrolyte tablets on the plane and a bath after checking in. This is how Gucci Westman does beauty on the move…

What are your must-do beauty rituals/treatments before you travel?

I like to increase my water intake – I usually combine with some electrolyte tablets and a little bit of salt. Depending on how long the flight is I always pre-order a vegan meal on the plane, but if I can, I prefer to eat my own prepared food.

How do you adapt your beauty regime when you travel?

It really depends on the location – if it’s tropical, in the mountains, or in the city. I adapt it to where I am. But make-up wise, I mainly focus on evening out my skin, giving myself a glow and a little warmth. If I go out at night, I’ll add a little mascara but typically no eyeshadow.

What’s the best way to downsize your at-home beauty product haul for travel?

Try and be efficient and know what you’re going to use. I’m always testing my lab samples so that increases my load!

Do you prefer to pack travel minis or full-size beauty staples?

Full-size beauty staples. I just bring the things I use every day so there’s no need to buy little travel-size versions.

Do you have a regular plane beauty routine?

Depends on the flight, but occasionally a face mask, a rich moisturiser from Augustinus Bader or Dr. Hauschka, and face oil from Beboe Therapies. As soon as I land, I like to have a bath, exfoliate and do a face mask.

How do you overcome jet-lag skin/eyes when you land?

Exercise is usually a good remedy for me. Plane food and drinking alcohol on the plane can really take its toll, but sometimes you gotta do what you gotta do!

Most women have more than one tone in their skin: To avoid what Gucci calls “flat face”—otherwise known as the ‘I’m wearing foundation” effect—she uses at least two shades of our Vital Skin stick formula: A lighter tone beneath the eyes or anywhere she wants a lifting effect, and another slightly deeper one to create depth along the forehead, nose, and sides of the face. For tips on this technique, watch our video tutorial on Gucci’s Guide on how to erase “Morning Face”. 💛✨

What’s been your favourite country to shop for home-grown beauty products?

I’ve always loved the beauty scene in France and Sweden but recently I really enjoyed shopping in Australia.

Favourite vacation spa so far?

I loved the treatments at Hotel Almhof Schneider – and the views are so beautiful! The Spa at Sandy Lane in Barbados is also really nice, and I remember feeling incredibly soothed at the Four Seasons in Hawaii.

So, what are your top skincare tips when travelling?

  1. Always have clean brushes – it enhances your make-up experience and makes it more pleasurable.
  2. Bring a mask or two for pre-make-up applications on vacation. I find SK-II Facial Treatment Mask is really nice to do.
  3. When travelling to high altitudes (which dries out my skin) I like to balance my skin’s PH overnight with a super-hydrating serum, like Sulwhasoo.
  4. Play around and be inspired by your vacation surroundings – let that help you choose how to do your make-up and break from the norm.
  5. Travelling with an edited make-up bag is nice. I can’t stand when it’s cluttered and makes me feel disorganised. I like it to be clean, purposeful, and curated. My Louis Vuitton small zip top bag is my favourite cosmetics bag to travel with.

THE PACKING LOWDOWN

Travel light or over-packer?

Unfortunately, an over-packer!

Facial or massage?

Massage, preferably deep tissue.

Vacation air-dry or blow-dry?

My air-dry is scary, but I roll with the punches on vacation and let it dry naturally.

Skincare wipes, yay or nay?

Yes, I like Volition’s Apple Cider Vinegar Pads.

Faux tan or au naturel?

Faux tan all the way. I had a scare a few years ago so my au naturel days are in the past.
