The CF Checklist: September

If you’re going to do September properly, make it new season and make it fresh off the runway. Turns out not everything that features on the catwalk requires a bank loan (we promise).

These are the hit AW19 pieces that graced the runways in February and we haven’t stopped thinking about since. Go versatile and your new AW19 wardrobe additions will take you right through to next spring – in cost-per-wear terms that’s one piece that spans three whole seasons.

Our fashion and beauty editor, Lisa Haynes, rounds up September’s runway favourites. Be quick because these are the pieces topping every fashion editor’s wish list.

THE BOX BAG

Forget labels and bling, these days It bag are Understated (with a capital U). Roksanda’s leather box bag has nailed AW19’s minimalist vibe with its clean lines and magnetic fastening front flap. Plus, if you want the ultimate transitional/neutral/goes-with-everything colour for a handbag, navy is it. Swing it by the handles or wear it on your shoulder to elevate all your autumn outfits.

THE LILAC JACKET

Who said pastels are just for spring? Lilac is the colour to know about if you want to bring a serious pop of colour to your autumnal look – a) it’s cooler than pink and b) looks epic with black. This oversized Dries Van Noten jacket gives you feminine softness with a utilitarian edge thanks to those shoulder epaulettes, side pockets and detachable belt details. Wear it belted with your favourite slip skirt.

THE DENIM SHIRT

Minimalism strikes again – this time via denim shirts. Lemaire’s runway version comes in dark indigo-blue denim with a streamlined silhouette in keeping with the label’s slick aesthetic. Yes, it still has pockets and buttons but they’re placed with minimum-fuss and contrast tobacco stitching. For double denim done in the chicest way possible, wear it tucked into the coordinating jeans, as seen on the catwalk.

THE JACQUARD DRESS

Feeling blue about parting with your summer dresses? Meet Ganni’s jacquard mini from the in-demand ‘Life on Earth’ collection for AW19. Made from weighty jacquard so it looks more structured, this wrap-effect dress will withstand autumn breezes and look amazing with bare legs and knee boots. On the runway it was styled with cowboy boots, but it will look just as cool with mules or sandals for sunshine trips away.

THE SLOUCH BOOTS

Queen of the cool girl boot, Isabel Marant has done it again with the Lakfee for AW19. Worn in multiple earthy tones on the catwalk, this pull-on boot is typified by its super-slouchy shape. Go for major slouch like the catwalk models, or wear your Lakfees more fitted to your leg, thanks to the adjustable snap-fastening tabs – clever. Plush shearling lining (tick), cool conical heels (tick); we think (read: we know) we’ve found the perfect autumn boots.

THE SHEARLING COAT

Some coats are worthy of the investment price tag – and eating baked beans for dinner. Step forward Burberry’s shearling blue showstopper. Designer Riccardo Tisci takes a shearling coat and makes it uber-modern with this unexpected colourway and edgy little details. Check out the wavy lines of shearling, exaggerated cosy collar and striped elasticated cuffs that give the jacket a sporty feel. We want.

THE HEART EARRINGS

If the minimalism vibe gets too much, stick on a pair of maximalist earrings. We heart Balenciaga’s oh-so opulent pair. Made in Italy (aka capital of OTT), the clip-on design is decorated with crystals and faux pearls. Warning to whatever else you’re wearing: people will only be looking at your ear lobes in these earrings. Wear them with a poloneck and bun to give them the backdrop they deserve.
