The Beauty Haul Diaries: Bobbi Brown

Her name may be synonymous with make-up but Bobbi Brown’s latest venture sees her swapping eyeshadow palettes for collagen powders as she champions beauty from the inside out.

The ultimate female cosmetics boss-turned-health coach has recently launched a line of supplements, Evolution_18, tapping into the wellness wave that’s taking over the beauty shelves.

“I’ve been a health and wellness junkie ever since I can remember,” says Bobbi. “I was working backstage with supermodels in make-up – and that’s when I started to become obsessed/passionate about eating the right foods, cleaning up the diet and drinking more water.”

Whether it’s make-up or skincare, this New Jersey-based beauty pro is big on ‘clean’ beauty – at home or away. From her $7 ‘magic’ all-natural face oil, to the one make-up product you need to save a jet-lagged face, stand by for the travel hacks that Bobbi swears by.

This is how Bobbi Brown does beauty – and wellness – on the move.

What are your must-do beauty rituals or treatments before you travel?

I’ll usually start organising and packing the week before a trip – I’m definitely not the person that throws things into a suitcase. I pack remedies because sometimes when I travel my digestion and gut can be a little off, so there’s everything from apple cider vinegar tablets (because you can’t bring the liquid with you) to probiotics. I always make sure I get a manicure before I leave.

How do you adapt your beauty regime when you travel?

I know it will really surprise people but I’m honestly so low-maintenance. When I travel, my skin is usually drier than normal so I’ll bring an oil that I put on my face – I’ve discovered this fantastic oil, apricot kernel oil, that’s $7 a bottle. It’s kind of a miracle because I don’t need that much make-up after that. I put a little lip gloss on and I’m pretty good to go.

What’s the best way to downsize your at-home beauty product haul for travel?

It depends on where I’m staying. If it’s a Soho House, they literally have every mini necessity you might need in the bathroom. If not, I love the MUJI travel containers so I can pour in my own cleanser, make-up remover and moisturiser, and my beauty is ready to go.

Do you prefer to pack travel minis or full-size beauty staples?

Oh definitely minis – I like everything little. I was using a lot of individual cosmetic bags and I stopped because I realised they take up so much room in my little Away suitcase. Even my personal make-up is in my bag – I take a brown shadow to line my eyes, fill in my brows, and cover up my greys, a black mascara, and a cream blush that I use for my cheeks and lips.

Do you have a regular plane beauty routine?

I use the apricot kernel oil to hydrate my skin. I’ll also bring gluten-free fibre crackers with me – GG Crackers – which are a miracle because they instantly fill you up so you’re not tempted to snack on salty nuts, which really don’t agree with me.

How do you overcome jet-lag skin/eyes when you land?

I’ll always pack Melatonin – especially when I travel to the UK because you can’t buy it there. It’s such a natural way for me to reset my clock. Sometimes jetlag works in your favour when you’re so tired that you pass out when you land.

What’s your favourite country to shop for home-grown beauty products?

I was just in Mexico recently and I found some really great coconut-based skincare – it just felt really homegrown and authentic, like it just came out of somebody’s kitchen.

What’s been your favourite vacation spa so far?

I love going to the Bahamas to relax.

What’s your top beauty tip when travelling?

Stay hydrated during your plane ride. Keep your eyes really well moisturised because they often tend to dry out quicker.

So, what are your top beauty and wellness tips when travelling?

1. Hydration is my top tip, no question. A small dash of Himalayan salt in your water can help your body to absorb it.
2. Make-up wise, pack a creamy blush/bronzer colour because when you’re tired there’s nothing that makes you look better.
3. Don’t let go of your health and wellness habits just because you’re away on vacation – even if it’s planking in your hotel room – it makes a huge difference to how you feel.

What products are in your must-pack beauty kit right now?

I’m obsessed with things that make my beauty more organised – I’ve been using Ruby Hammer’s brush set to do my eyes, which is like carrying three brushes in one. From my Evolution_18 line, Recharge is amazing when you travel because it gives you hydration and energy. And besides my $7 oil, one product I won’t leave home without since I discovered it is Augustinus Bader, The Rich Cream – I’m obsessed.
