Queen Of The Binge Watch? Villas To Book From Our Favourite Shows

Lockdown has caused a seismic shift in how we’re spending our time. Cancelled holidays, grounded flights and zero social plans have left a gigantic void in our lives.

We’ve been planning future trips, exercising at home, and reading more than ever, but sometimes a lazy day spent binge-watching our favourite TV series is just what we need.

Killing Eve is our latest obsession. The third season has just concluded in the UK, and it was as gripping as ever. We were also thoroughly envious of Villanelle (ruthless assassin, lover of all things ostentatious) and her Art Nouveau style apartment in Barcelona. A bit of digging revealed it was available to rent on Airbnb – long weekends in Barcelona never seemed so tempting.

Hotels, Airbnb’s and holiday homes are often used by production teams when filming on location, and a surge in bookings and boost in popularity usually follows their big-screen moment.

From Otis’ house in Sex Education (nestled in the UK’s scenic Wye Valley) to Marcus’ waterfront Ibiza villa in White Lines, we’ve rounded up some of the best apartments, hotels and villas from the shows we’ve been binge-watching during lockdown.

Killing Eve Villanelle’s Barcelona Apartment

From filming in some our favourite European cities, to Villanelle’s ever-changing – but utterly fabulous – wardrobe (who else can pull off a candy pink tulle dress one day, and an oversized trouser suit the next?) we can’t get enough of Killing Eve. Villanelle’s Barcelona apartment is an excellent example of Catalan Modernista architecture and includes stained-glass windows, gilded ceilings and colourful tiling – we’d expect nothing less for Villanelle. Once home to the de Ramos family in 1906, it is now owned by a Spanish architect who has preserved the period features and filled the space with antiques and quirky ornaments of ‘great artistic value’. You’ll find the apartment in Barcelona’s Gràcia district, an area known for its leafy squares and designer boutiques.

Normal People That Italian villa

Sally Rooney’s best-selling novel, Normal People, was adapted into a TV series this year and it’s given us all the feels. The story shows the emotions, yearning and heartbreak that come with young love – it’s raw, intense and something we can all relate too. Most of the filming was done on location in Ireland, but there’s one location which really piqued our interest…the Italian Villa where the couple reunites one summer. The villa is actually a stone farmhouse and is located in the middle of Italy’s Lazio region (a 40-minute drive from Rome). The property boasts sweeping views across forest swathed hills and a huge swimming pool surrounded by lush greenery.

White Lines Marcus’ villa

White Lines is a sun-soaked whodunnit set on the hedonistic party island of Ibiza, and it’s made us seriously crave a summer vacation. The show follows Zoe, a Librarian from Manchester, who is on the island trying to solve the murder of her brother, Axel (he’s been missing for 20 years). Zoe soon finds herself caught up in the island’s murky criminal underworld, but is it more alluring than her husband back home? This comedy thriller is filled with drug-fuelled parties, an epic soundtrack (Frankie Knuckles, Happy Monday’s, Faithless) and superstar DJ’s. If the islands craggy cliffs and brilliant blue waters are calling your name, then why not rent the villa which Marcus (Axel’s former pal and largely incompetent drug-dealer) owns in the show. The waterfront villa sleeps 10 and boasts direct access to the ocean. There’s also a swimming pool in the garden and a private terrace.

Ozark Del’s house

Marty Byrde is a financial advisor and family man based in Chicago – he’s also laundering money for Mexico’s ‘second’ biggest drug cartel. After things go south in Chi-town, Marty is forced to up sticks and move his family to the Ozark Lakes in Missouri. Things go from bad to worse for poor Marty, who finds himself embroiled in the cartel’s dirty work – from turf wars with ‘red-necks’ to grisly murders – all under the watchful, and increasingly suspicious, eyes of the FBI. Although the show is set in the Ozarks, the majority of filming was done around Atlanta on Lake Allatoona and Lake Lanier. The lavish home of drug cartel leader ‘Del’ is Chateau Elan, a hotel and resort in Braselton, Georgia. The award winning-luxury destination is well known for its exceptional wine cellar, vineyards and championship golf.

Sex Education Otis’ House

If you’ve not seen Sex Education on Netflix, then add it to your list immediately. The show follows socially awkward teenager, Otis as he makes his way through the trials and tribulations of high school, the whole process made all the more humiliating by his sex therapist Mum (played by the fantastic Gillian Anderson). The show, now on its second season, might look like it’s set in an American High School, thanks to the schools red brick exterior and lush surrounding woodland, but the majority of the programme is actually filmed in Wales. The most beautiful property in the show has to be Otis and his Mum’s huge hilltop house, which overlooks the winding rivers and dense forests of the Wye Valley on the Welsh / English border. The Norwegian inspired house, known as The Chalet, will soon be available to rent via their website. For the latest updates follow their Instagram page which is regularly updated.
