Suitcase Series: De La Vali, The It Girl Dresses

Jana Sascha and Laura Castro, the founders of De La Vali, are so in sync, they turned up to our Zoom interview wearing the exact same blazer: ‘it happens all the time’, they chuckle.

This shared aesthetic vision comes in handy as co-designers of one of the hottest emerging fashion labels. Their party-ready dresses have caused quite a storm since the brand’s inception in 2017; worn by It Girls and Socialites including Kate Moss, Dua Lipa and Poppy Delevingne, to name but a few.

Raised in Ibiza, the island’s cool bohemian spirit has infused their designs. Jana says, “you never know where your day is going to end up, so when you leave the house you want to feel great-ready for whatever happens.” This versatility to De La Vali makes a De La Vali dress the perfect addition to a holiday capsule wardrobe. Laura adds, “you can wear it very glam to a wedding, but then play around with it with sandals for dinner. We believe you can wear a De La Vali piece a million different ways.”

De La Vali came into fruition following a trip to India. The girls decided to make a collection and bring it home to Ibiza, nonchalantly selling the dresses at a modest beach shack. On the instant success Laura says, “It was such a whirlwind, we were in Ibiza that summer at a party and there were 20 girls wearing De La Vali!” Following this, the brand was quickly picked up by Browns Fashion, Net-A-Porter and Harvey Nichols – the stamp of approval for any emerging talent.

The duo have just launched a high-octane glam AW20 collection inspired by Hitchcock heroines and De La Vali’s star is very much on the ascent with exciting plans in the pipeline, including a Christmas capsule collection and a top-secret shoe collaboration for spring 2021.

And as for a perfect day spent in their home town? Forever in sync, Laura claims “a boat day with all our friends in Formentera” is the perfect day. Jana adds, “Boat days always make you feel so recharged.”

From packing an assortment of their dresses, to bucket list destinations, we dive into Laura and Jana’s travel psyche.

What is the first trip you remember taking?

Jana: When I was just 2, my parents took me on a trip around the world. I can’t say that I remember much, but I have seen photos, which have formed my memories.

Laura: From a very young age my parents often used to take me away with them so I have lots of fond memories of travelling. I remember one particularly beautiful family holiday in Tongoy, Chile with my South American Family. It’s so picturesque – a simply beautiful fisherman town.

Which holidays have been your favourite and why?

J: A trip to India where Laura and I started De La Vali.

L: The first time I went to Positano with such magical people.

Where or what is your escape?

J: Going home to Ibiza is my easy escape, but when stuck in London, it’s music.

L: Everywhere is an escape, but for sure Ibiza. Home is where I am the most relaxed and content.
