Make A Meal Of It: Tablescaping Your Dinner For Two

Give your dinner for two a sense of occasion with a perfectly curated tablescape.

What have we learned from lockdown? Our previously rushed mid-week dinners have become lavish three-course affairs. We also fancy ourselves as accomplished bakers and budding tablescapers too.

For the uninitiated, tablescaping means adorning tabletops with a flurry of tablecloths. coloured glassware, pretty crockery and candles- all to make dining in that little bit more special and Instagramming the results, of course.

Approach the table with the the same attention to detail you would for your wardrobe. Mix textures, heights, patterns and colours, whether opting for a sophisticated and tonal affair, or a smorgasbord of the wonderful eclectic pieces you’ve collated.

Here’s our edit to create the magic, even if it’s just dinner for two, which you can then recreate for decadent parties to come.

THE TABLECLOTH

The tablecloth is the starting foundation for any tablescape and the building blocks to base everything else around. Summerill & Bishop has a vast array of linen tablecloths to chose from; there are neutral pastel shades through to kaleidoscopic patterns (great for masking any spilt wine).

THE CANDLES

Luxury e-commerce site, Moda Operandi, isn't satisfied in just kitting out our wardrobes with the latest clothing trends of the season, it will do the same for our tabletops too. MO founder, Lauren Santo Domingo, has developed the chic in-house interiors line, Moda Domus. Think everyday essentials, but elevated. Candles are a simple way to create ambience and also make a beautiful centrepiecate. These pretty candle holders are made in Italy by local artisans and best paired with a simple cream candlestick.

THE NAPKINS

Fans of Matilda Goad will notice the corresponding trim on these pretty, colourful napkins, echo her signature scalloped lampshades. In a mixed selection of colours, they inject a spectrum of colour onto a neutral table. For fans of a more tonal tablescape, napkins can be bought individually too.

THE PLACEMATS

Alice-Naylor Leyland’s elegant tablescapes have gained her a legion of Instagram followers, that spawned the 2019 launch of her brand, ‘Mrs Alice’. Her ‘Tablescape in a Box’ is truly a masterpiece, and all you need for a curated table without the faff of sourcing everything yourself. For those after a more eclectic affair, individual items can be purchased.
