The Ultimate Cashmere Guide

‘Tis the season for swaddling yourself in cashmere. Here is the CF guide on where to buy the best yarns around – from high end to high street.

Cashmere is a super sumptuous fabric, synonymous with luxury, but it doesn’t have to cost the earth. The high street has plenty of options too (if you don’t want to splurge). Here are the cashmere pieces we are currently coveting (they also make a great last-minute Christmas gift too; just FYI).

THE SOCKS

Johnston's of Elgin is a Scottish-heritage brand known for its super-luxe cashmere. What better way to stay cosy when WFH than with a pair of cashmere bed socks and hot water bottle? It saves on the heating bill too…

THE ROLL NECK

A roll-neck in every neutral colour (we're talking black, cream, navy, butterscotch) is a staple every discerning wardrobe should have – preferably said roll-necks are cashmere too. The silhouette is super flattering, elongating necks and accentuating a smaller bust – plus, it looks just as chic worn alone as when used a base layer for transeasonal dresses.

THE SLIPPERS

Yes, fluffy slippers and shearling-lined Birkenstocks are everywhere, but what you really want is a leopard cashmere print pair of ballet flats to keep toes toasty. This pair are as playful as you'd expect from designer Madeleine Thompson, whose rainbow-adorned knits are inimitable.

THE DRESS

A sweater dress need not be slouchy and oversized; it can be perennially chic too. Take, for example, this Tom Ford dress – the relaxed silhouette with a cinching waist tie and alluring cut out works as an evening dress that's also incredibly comfy.

The Co-Ord

New York cool label, Khaite, was already building a cult following of fashion afficinados when it was catapulted into the fashion stratosphere thanks to Katie Holmes. The actress wore this exact bra and cardigan, whcih subsequently saw them placed on repeat order for the rest of 2020. The knitted top is also a genius solution for those who aren’t quite ready to re-embrace underwire bras.

THE COAT

Barrie is the Scottish cashmere brand used by some of the world’s most prestigious fashion houses, like Chanel, but it's own designs are just as fashion-forward. This shearling and cashmere coat is very 1970s – you'll look like a luxe version of Penny Lane in Almost Famous.

THE HAT

Accessories are a great way to punctuate an outfit with colour if you aren’t one for bold tones. This pretty pink beanie adds a pop of colour to a neutral palette and shows that cashmere can be wallet-friendly too.

THE STATEMENT KNIT

This retro-inspired ski jumper is charmingly kitsch, and thanks to its eye-catching motif, it makes a real statement whether you're hitting the slopes or not.

THE THROW

The Elder Statesman is known for channelling hippie luxe in its sunny designs and this cashmere throw is no exception. Presented in rainbow stripes, it happily delivers a dose of California cool to cheer up neutral interiors.

THE JUMPSUIT

Italian designer, Loro Piana, stays true to its minimalist brand codes with this charcoal jumpsuit. Sumptuous and sleek, it’s woven from cashmere and silk to give polish and finesse to any WFH wardrobe. It would make for ideal in-flight attire too.

THE GLOVES

Any brand with an essential cashmere collection is a friend of ours, such is the case with Chinti & Parker. Gloves are an eternal winter wardrobe staple, and these in mismatched colour block cashmere will be treasured for years to come.

THE JOGGERS

Amanda Wakeley has long epitomised luxe athleisure with relaxed-yet-tailored silhouettes in the most luxurious of fabrics. These cashmere joggers are just that.

CF top tip: These are best paired with one of the brand’s boyfriend jumpers to complete the look.
