The Best SPFs To Wear Under Make-Up

We’ve been told enough times we should be wearing SPF daily, all year round, to invest in the future of our skin.

Previously textures have been chalky, cloying, and uncomfortable for sensitive skin types, but with a coterie of wearable creams, sprays, and gels, there’s simply no excuse. Here’s the CF edit of the best SPFs to wear under make-up now…

CLARINS

Think you don’t need to wear SPF if you aren't planning to leave the house? Think again! This hardworking SPF from Clarins is perfect for city skin. Powered by mango leaf extract it fights against blue light from a day spent perched in front of your laptop as well as against pollution, pollen, and other external aggressors. The super-nourishing formula offers eight hours of hydration to keep you comfortable all day too.,

ULTRA VIOLETTE

Ultra Violette has just landed on Space NK and is already causing a huge stir with beauty insiders – and for good reason. Formulated to work with, not against, the other products in your skincare regime, this silky serum leaves no white cast and is the perfect base for your foundation. Not only does it offer SPF 50 protection, but with vitamin C-rich kakadu plum and dragosine it protects against free radicals and blue light. The uplifting scent of freshly cut roses is quite lovely too.

DRUNK ELEPHANT

Sensitive skin types will benefit from chemical-free sunscreen formulas such as this one by Drunk Elephant. It’s also free of essential oils, silicones, and fragrance to further avoid irritation. Thanks to a cocktail of antioxidants, such as grape juice and astaxanthin, it keeps skin looking youthful, whilst nourishing raspberry oil moisturises and plumps out fine lines for a fresh finish.

SVR

Those susceptible to Rosacea (myself included) know full well that heat and sun are a lethal combination which can lead to a nasty flare up. This SPF from French pharmacy brand, SVR is perfect for managing the skin condition. With ultra-high SPF 50+ protection, as well as heat-regulating properties to sooth skin, it has the dual benefit of treating existing redness whilst preventing further discomfort. Additional liquorice extract mollifies and decongests skin, and it’s also non-comedogenic so won’t block your pores in the heat. A big tick from us.

DR. BARBARA STURM

For those who can’t stand the feel of sunscreen on their skin, Dr. Barbara Sturm Sun Drops are a godsend. At the higher end of the price spectrum, a little goes a long way – so it's well worth the investment. Simply apply undilluted onto skin as a serum, or mix a few drops in with your favourite moisturiser. Not only does this clever formula protect against sun damage, but packed to the gills with Vitamin E and cassia extract, it gets to work repairing damaged cells.

LA ROCHE POSAY

If you are serious about anti-aging this hybrid SPF and active moisturiser gives you so much more than just sun protection. Brimming with niacinamide, hyaluronic acid, and LHAs, it works to treat existing damage (we're looking at you age spots and pigmentation) and protect against UVA and UVB rays. It’s super hydrating, so there’s no need to layer over moisturiser. Drying to a soft finish, skin is left glowing and primed for your foundation.

SKINCEUTICALS

With tranexamic acid and niacinamide, this is a supercharged SPF that’s as good at protecting skin from the sun, as it is preventing and reducing discolouration. It simply melts into skin too, which is a major bonus.

SARAH CHAPMAN

Superstar facialist Sarah Chapman has made an SPF that's a joy to use. The texture is featherlight and sinks into skin, whilst light-reflecting particles create a soft-focus effect to blur imperfections. Next up is the science bit: not only is skin protected from environmental aggressors, but also blue light, thermal, and infrared too. Clever. If that wasn't enough, the myriad DNA-repair actives, multivitamin complex, and antioxidants, restore skin to it's true brilliance. We're sold.

DR SEBAGH

Fans of Dr Sebagh will know how efficacious the products are, and this primer is no exception. Perfect for giving skin a lit-from-within glow, it instantly smoothes, refreshes, and illuminates, whilst delivering the long-lasting results of diminished age spots and pigmentation. With a suitably matte finish, skin is prepped and ready for the next step of your beauty regimen.
