A Seat At The Bar: American Bar, The Savoy, London

In our new column, A Seat At The Bar we showcase the world’s best bars – from plush cocktail spots to dive bars, and everything in-between.

This week, we’re spotlighting a true classic: American Bar at The Savoy, London.

The Lowdown

The American Bar is not only London’s but also Britain’s oldest surviving cocktail bar, dating back to 1893. Although the bar is steeped in history, it’s stayed relevant, achieving a reputation globally as one of the world’s most iconic cocktail bars – they even have an impressive collection of awards to prove it. One of two bars situated in the five-star hotel, The American Bar is known as much for its tasty drinks as for its atmosphere, with nightly live music courtesy of their resident pianist.

What To Order

Donned in their trademark white blazers, the bartenders at The Savoy certainly know a thing or two about shaking up and stirring down cocktails. The bar’s most recent drinks card, The Savoy Songbook, is inspired by all the musicians and songwriters that have stepped foot in the venue over the years. The title of each cocktail refers to a memorable song lyric or line and each drink has an accompanying song on their bar playlist. Our personal favourites include the Sun, Sun, Sun, a zesty cocktail made with orange wine, yuzu and lime and the Electric Lover, a drink inspired by Prince’s famous Purple Rain, complete with edible glitter.

Who To Bring

The perfect spot to raise a glass of something delicious with your loved ones, we suggest planning for those big upcoming dates in the diary, whether it’s memorable birthdays or special anniversaries, with your nearest and dearest.

When To Go

With Covent Garden and Soho just a stone’s throw from The Savoy, the bar is surrounded by a selection of great restaurants. Because of this, we making reservations at the American Bar for a post-dinner nightcap (plus an encore). Better still, why not make a weekend of it and ditch the commute home by booking a room.

The Dress Code

The American Bar is dressed to the nines, so you will want to follow suit. Providing the perfect opportunity to dust off your Sunday best, slap on your favourite lippy, and get glammed up for the night. Plus, given that The Savoy is known for its celebrity clientele, you never know who you might bump into.

The CF Tip(ple)
