The Beauty Haul Diaries: Huda Kattan

Influencer-turned-beauty-entrepreneur, Huda Kattan, is a true icon in the world of beauty.

Originally a Hollywood Make-up Artist, she launched Huda Beauty with an inaugural sell-out line of false lashes ten years ago. Since then, the range has gone from strength-to-strength, now encompassing a full make-up collection, regularly responding to her customers’ requests. In February, Huda also celebrated the one-year anniversary of her skincare line, Wishful. Not one to rest on her laurels, this is only the start for Huda: “It’s so humbling to look back at my first eyelashes and then look at where we are today. It’s been such an amazing journey and honestly, it’s just the tip of the iceberg. There is so much I want to do with Huda Beauty and Wishful.”

One of three close-knit sisters, Huda’s love of beauty started at a young age: “My earliest memory is when Alya, my older sister, would put make-up on me. She would do all sorts: bold eyes, colourful lips – the combinations were endless. It might not have looked my best by the end of it, but it was great fun.”

As the CEO of not one, but two, global brands, travel is a huge part of Huda’s lifestyle: “I travel for inspiration, for work, for pleasure, and also to see all my teams across the globe. Also, it’s almost an escape from reality. Who doesn’t want to sit by the pool and eat endless food!”

With wonder product Silk Balm and a coterie of other products in tow, we delve into Huda Kattan’s travel psyche.

How do you adapt your beauty regime when you travel?

Honestly, I really don’t. I pretty much do the same routine as I do at home; taking care of my skin is so important to me.

What’s the best way to downsize your at-home beauty product haul for travel?

Minis. I love a mini!

Do you prefer to pack travel minis or full-size beauty staples? And why?

Minis. They don’t weigh as much, or take up as much room.

Do you have a regular plane beauty routine?

I am a pro flyer: I usually fly a lot, so I know how to fly so well. I’m usually constantly going on flights – sometimes I only visit the place for a few hours – and I can end up being on the plane longer than I am in the country I am visiting.

I always have a whole bag of products with me. The plane is the worst place for your skin, it can wreak havoc. I love a mask and I always, always, pack my trusted Thirst Trap Cocoon Mask for a serious hydration hit. I also have nose sprays, hand cream, and hand sanitiser, of course. Lip balm is also super important. I always have Silk Balm with me anyway, but applying it on the plane is a must. I also carry fragrance; no one wants to start stinking! I carry vitamins and drink lots of water too.

What’s been your favourite vacation spa so far?

Iceland is amazing. The scenery and the spas are incredible.

How do you unwind when travelling?

I’m working a lot of the time – whether it be for my brands, or even just posting on my socials – I find myself not having a lot of ‘me time’. But on holiday, to help me unwind, and to help me relax, I always take books. I read them in bed, by the pool, and in the pool. As I’ve grown older, I find myself not having time to read, so when I’m on holiday I really try and take advantage of the spare time.

What’s your favourite country to shop for home-grown beauty products?

Paris will forever be my favourite place. I could get lost in the French pharmacies for hours!

How do you overcome jet-lag skin/eyes when you land?

Eye masks are my go-to. Honestly, they just transform your eyes. I don’t really like wearing make-up on the plane, and try to sleep as much as I can on the plane. But I also use a good eye mask.

What are your top beauty tips when travelling?
Keep your face hydrated.  Minimal make-up during holidays also allows my skin to breath and rejuvenate. With my hair, I try to keep it away from my face; hair ties are a must. During a pool day you can probably find me wearing a nourishing and conditioning hair mask.

THE PACKING LOWDOWN

Travel light or over-packer?

Over-packer, I always like to be prepared.

Spa facial or massage?

Facial.

Vacation air-dry or blow-dry?

Blow-dry.

Faux tan or au naturel?

Au naturel.

Desert island beauty product?

That’s too hard. Mascara, Silk Balm, tweezers, and rose hip oil. All of them!
