Five Of Our Favourite Northeastern Getaways

If you haven’t experienced New England’s charm, you’re missing out. With destinations to match any season, opt for a seaside or country escape in one of the area’s many bucolic spots.

From eastern and western Massachusetts and Rhode Island, to upstate Vermont, there’s much to see and do within this Northeastern region. Here are a few of our luxurious favourites…

The Harbor View Hotel, Edgartown, Martha’s Vineyard, Massachusetts

In contrast to its neighbour, Nantucket, Martha’s Vineyard has a laid-back vibe that many locals and visitors (not to mention celebrities like Carly Simon, Lady Gaga, and the Obamas) can’t get enough of.  While we advise you make the most of your time here by exploring the 26-mile-long island, and of all its signature neighbourhoods, we suggest making legendary Edgartown property, The Harbor View Hotel, your home base.

A celebrated icon for over 130 years, the property received a top-to-bottom renovation in 2019, including the addition of a four-bedroom penthouse suite and two new restaurants Bettini and Roxy Pool Bar. The hotel’s design blends classic New England stylings with modern, fresh elements; its sophisticated aesthetic respects the original architecture and accentuates the views of the harbour, using the island’s natural beauty as a primary colour palette. The picturesque property also boasts a quaint lighthouse and stunning water views, which make for beyond gorgeous photos for your Insta feed.

The Lodge at Spruce Peak, Stowe, Vermont

This chic destination makes for a cosy and romantic getaway any time of year. Formerly Stowe Mountain Lodge, The Lodge at Spruce Peak recently received major upgrades to improve its already elevated slope-side experience, making it the “Aspen of the East”, or so people say. And like Aspen, summer here is just as delightful as winter.

From killer golfing and five-star spa experiences, to culinary events with world-class chefs, this quintessential New England village has much to explore. Hit the trails in the Green Mountains or relax poolside – spectacular views provide the perfect setting to create marvellous memories.

The luxury property also recently introduced The Penthouses at Spruce Peak, exclusive three- and four-bedroom residences with a private lounge, personal concierge, and a host of phenomenal amenities, as well as One Spruce Peak, a new, Alpine-chic, 27-unit condo building.

Ocean House, Watch Hill, Rhode Island

Step back in time in beautiful Watch Hill, Rhode Island, a charming beachside village, complete with pristine white sand and a picturesque town centre. Home to the grand Ocean House, this romantic seaside resort is perched high on the bluffs, allowing for sweeping views of the Atlantic Ocean.

A convenient drive or train ride from New York, Boston, and other East-Coast cities and airports, the luxurious destination is easy to get to, but manages to feel like it’s a million miles away. When you’re not seaside, dipping your toes in the Atlantic Ocean or being waited on like royalty, enjoy the property’s spa – all 12,000-square-feet of it –, which offers seasonal treatments and packages. Alternatively, try out their Center for Wine and Culinary Arts where you can learn to make farm-to-table meals alongside their in-house chef, food forager, and sommelier.

Wequassett Resort and Golf Club, Harwich, Massachusetts

From JFK’s favourite breakfast dish to all of his summer pastimes – golf, tennis, swimming, and boating – this seaside resort offers all of the things that make Cape Cod a beloved American vacation destination. Wequassett’s 27 acres of unspoilt waterfront on Pleasant Bay, make for a picture-perfect backdrop for your holiday. Wine and dine at twenty-eight Atlantic, nabbing a table along the restaurant’s eight-foot windows, which overlook the bay, if you can. Later, enjoy a digestif at tavern and cocktail bar, Thoreau.

We highly recommend chartering a boat and exploring one (or more) of the area’s historic villages. If you’re a golfer, the primary attraction here is neighbouring Cape Cod National Golf Club, one of the most prestigious in the country. If you’re traveling with little ones, take advantage of the resort’s award-winning Children’s Center, which is fully equipped with video-gaming stations, toys, crafts, an outdoor amphitheatre, and a nautical-themed pirate ship playground.

The Wheatleigh Hotel, Lenox, Massachusetts

Be transported to the Gilded Age at this exquisite 19th-century Italianate mansion set on 22 acres of grounds, originally laid out by Frederick Law Olmsted. Commissioned as a country home by owner Henry H. Cook in 1893, this exquisite estate was inspired by his ancestral family home in Wheatley, Oxfordshire.

Listed on the National Register of Historic Places, this luxurious hotel features just 19 contemporary guest rooms. Wheatleigh’s accommodations boast high ceilings, fine antiques, museum-quality art, large soaking tubs, and his and hers showers. While each room is architecturally and stylistically unique, they all have high-tech finishings and amenities – think Bose Bluetooth speakers, Bang & Olufsen entertainment centres, and free WiFi. The property’s fine French restaurant, The Portico, adds to the flawless luxury with formal, multi-course meals inspired by modern French gastronomy. Reservations are a must.
