Bath, UK: No.15 by GuestHouse, Bath

For a UK staycation, with a romantic flair, where better than Bath to while away a weekend? In between reading extracts from Pride and Prejudice to one another (this is Jane Austen territory after all), pause to take in the comforting surrounds of No.15 by GuestHouse, Bath. Its Georgian façade is in contrast to the eclectic interiors, which are fanciful by design. The Pulteney Rooms are our favourites – make a note when booking, your SO will thank you for it.

Paris, France: Château Voltaire

On the corner of rue Saint-Roch and avenue de l’Opéra, you’ll find the chic as can be Château Voltaire. The epitome of understated luxury, this city hideaway is certain to be a hit with your hard to impress love. Rooms are sweet and serene – book out the Aparment if you can. The just-for-two spa makes for perfect afternoon activity, while dinner at the charming Emil Brasserie is the perfect close to a day spent roaming around rue Saint-Honoré.

Copenhagen, Denmark: Hotel Sanders

Founded by Danish ballet dancer Alexander Kølpin, this boutique hotel is the ideal landing pad for a weekend pas de deux. The restaurant, Sanders Kitchen, is made for intimate meals – dine by candlelight at a corner street-view table and watch life go by. Post-prandial, head to the Tata cocktail bar or the rooftop terrace and toast to some you time and the weekend ahead.

Co. Laois, Ireland: Ballyfin

Irish country houses don’t get much finer than Ballyfin. Set at the foot of the Slieve Bloom Mountains, the Regency mansion is the stuff of dreams. From decadent surrounds – take the Westmeath Room, with its Faberge-egg shaped bed, for example – to five or eight-course tasting menus enjoyed in the comfort of hotel’s impressive dining room, Ballyfin is the earthbound equivalent of cloud nine.

Stockholm, Sweden: Hotel Ett Hem

‘Ett Hem’ – which translates to ‘a home’ – offers guests the warmest of welcomes. Laidback and utterly lovely, it’s the perfect place to squirrel away for a weekend, accompanied by good wine and better company. Book the Suite, which boasts a king-size, four-poster bed, as well as a magnificent marble tub and wowing tiled stove; with surrounds this seducing, you’ll be forgiven for not venturing far beyond your sleeping quarters.
