A Seat At The Bar: KOL Mezcaleria, London

In our new column, A Seat At The Bar we showcase the world’s best bars – from plush cocktail spots to dive bars, and everything in-between.

This week, we’re spotlighting KOL Mezcaleria, a Mexican cocktail bar located on the lower-ground floor of KOL.

The Lowdown

Paying homage to the magic of Mexico’s mezcal bars, KOL Mezcaleria stands apart from its Marylebone neighbours. A collaboration between chef Santiago Lastra, of Noma Mexico fame, and MJMK Restaurants, this ultrachic, hazily lit basement bar has become a firm favourite amongst those in the know.

What To Order

Across their food and beverage offering focus is placed on Mexican flavours and seasonal, often wild, British ingredients. Their Antojitos menu, which translates as ‘little cravings’, offers an interesting interpretation of traditional Mexican street food and delicacies from indigenous communities throughout the country. We gobbled up a melange of plates including the octopus tostada, the Kentish Oaxacan cheese quesadilla with Wiltshire truffles, and the KOL guacamole. The churros, with chocolate and mezcal mousse (and pork crackling) served as the perfect coda.

Working with a number of small independent Mexican producers, spirits at the bar are sourced from Oaxaca, Puebla, The Yucatán, and beyond. With extensive selections of mezcal and agave available, it’s natural to feel a little overwhelmed with choice. Even if you panic and order the Margarita, you will have made an excellent decision, so relax. Need a prompt? The rose hip and apple Highball (a fusion of El Destilado crabapple Oaxaca rum, Somerset 10-year cider brandy, and rose-hip cordial) is a good place to start.

Who To Bring

This is a great spot for a date night, whether with a new flame or a long-standing love.

When To Go

Open from Thursday to Sunday, from 5PM to 1AM; walk-ins are welcome, but you’d be best advised to make a booking at this off-kilter watering hole.

The CF Tip(ple)
