The Beauty Haul Diaries: Kirsten Kjaer Weis

As a make-up artist in the early nineties and noughties, Kirsten Kjaer Weis noticed models were experiencing myriad skin problems due to the make-up being used on their faces, and she struggled to seek natural alternatives which delivered the same results.

This was her ‘aha moment’ as she calls it: “I realised if I could take the best high-performance and luxury feel of conventional make-up and combine it with the ingredients profile of natural products, it could, in essence, become a new category.” Indeed, when Kjaer Weis launched in 2010, as an organic beauty brand with refillable products, it was a niche offering and remains at the forefront of sustainable beauty, despite many brands following suit since…

Kjaer Weis products are lauded for their effortless application which embrace the natural beauty of skin, something that Kirsten herself champions daily. “My five-minute make-up look consists of The Face Oil with The Beautiful Primer for a luminescent base, with a bit of foundation on top. I put our Cream Blush on the apples of the cheek, apply mascara, and finish with our Nude, Naturally Lipstick in the shade Gracious.”

Equipped with her daily skincare essentials, we delve into Kirsten Kjaer Weis’ travel psyche.

What are your must do beauty rituals/treatments before you travel?

I drink a lot of water all day, as well as juicing. I travel with a moisturised face, wear a little mascara, and apply a hydration mist. I feel much better if I keep it light food wise when travelling, and try to get as much sleep as possible.

How do you adapt your beauty regime when you travel?

I always bring a big bottle of water for the flight, and I make sure to bring our Beautiful Oil and Eye Balm in my handbag.

What is the best way to down-size your beauty products for travel?

I like to have my favourite products with me, and not make big changes when on the go. I have a pretty minimalist routine: cleanser, scrub, moisturiser, and eye balm are my go-to’s, and get me through travelling with ease.

Do you prefer to pack travel minis or full-size beauty staples? And why?

I prefer as many minis as possible in order to travel light. I have a selection of mini bottles that I reuse over and over again.

How do you unwind on holiday?

These days I try to go to places that are as quiet as possible. Maybe it’s part of getting older, but being in nature is my sacred place. Long walks by the ocean, or hikes in the countryside help me unwind. I also love visiting Ireland, with its beauty and low-key approach to life. Being with my husband, a great book, good food, and as little tech as possible is also great.

What has been you favourite vacation spa so far and why?

One of my closest friends has a house in Bali, and there are so many beautiful spa treatments available on the island.

How do you overcome jet-lagged skin/eyes when you land?

A lot of it starts on the plane, I like to fast as much as possible when flying, sticking to liquids, getting as much sleep as [I can], and then have either a massage when I land or a cool shower to freshen up.

What’s been your favourite country to shop for homegrown beauty products?

My home country of Denmark: there are some beautiful natural brands like Rudolph Care and Karmameju.

What are your top skincare make-up/hair tips when travelling?

When it comes to skincare, I stay moisturised and hydrated. For make-up, a cream blush can brighten up your face instantly. Apply it to the apple of the cheek, instead of alongside the cheekbones. This is naturally where we have colour when coming back from a yoga class or brisk walk, and it immediately makes you look refreshed.

What’s on your beauty wish list right now?

An at-home steam room: it’s good for the skin, for the hair, and overall wellness. We are about to re-do our bathroom and it’s high on my list.
