The Best Summer Stays In The Mediterranean

We’ve rolled out the bucket ‘n’ spade map, and pinpointed the best private stays in the Mediterranean for summer ’22.

From coastal France to the Greek islands, we’ve sourced the ultimate properties for a sun-kissed sojourn with your nearest and dearest.

In Partnership with onefinestay.

Mougins, France: Villa Katia

The enchanting village of Mougins, in the inland area of Cannes, is a true Provençal postcard. The characterful Villa Katia matches in charm, surrounded by luscious gardens, a generously sized pool, and a French boules court (for those who want to fit in with the locals). In the mornings, walk to the nearby bakery for provisions best enjoyed back at Villa Katia – ideally on the terrace –, and in the evenings whip up a storm with/for friends in the elegant, all-cream kitchen, which leads out to the formal dining area – alternatively, dine poolside, aided by the adjacent barbecue on lazier days. If you tire of your own cooking, a quick 15-minute drive will take you to the beaches of Cannes and its world-class restaurants.

Costa del Sol, Spain: Villa Geneva

Marbs is always a good idea, even more so when you happen upon a property as swish as Villa Geneva. Primely positioned within the ‘Golden Mile’ of Puerto Banús, Villa Geneva is within walking distance of the marina’s promenade – meaning buzzy beach bars, luxury boutiques, and fine-dining restaurants are right on your doorstep. Back at base, the spacious, open-plan layout imbues a light and airy space. Bedrooms offer sea views, complete with private balconies to sit and sip your café con leche in the morning. The terrace is particularly impressive; a wide-open space drenched in sunlight, offering an outdoor kitchen, a huge swimming pool, and plenty of comfy daybeds and sofas where you can sit and soak up the Spanish sunshine. Bliss.

Sardinia: Villa Rafael

Resting on the north side of Costa Smeralda, Villa Rafael offers jaw-dropping views from practically every angle. A great spot for group gatherings, the property has five bedrooms, all with king-sized beds and ensuite bathrooms, comfortably sleeping ten guests. With all the makings of an exceptional getaway: stylish surrounds (think stone walls and wicker furniture), cool amenities (note the massage room and sauna), and easy access to Porto Rafael town, few places will top this Sardinian secret. Our favourite part: the terrace – one of the property’s many outdoor areas. It’s the ideal place for relaxing on balmy afternoons with a fresh salad (or tube or Pringles) and glass of something chilled.

Mykonos, Greece: Villa Aeras

This seven-bedroom home on the mesmeric island of Mykonos is a convenient ten-minute walk from powdery Panormos Beach, and less than a 15-minute drive from Mykonos Town itself. In short, when staying at this property it’s up to you to choose how amped up or chilled out your time on the island is. Embracing the latter, interiors at Villa Aeras are contemporary in style, blending natural materials to great effect, while exteriors offer a mixture of shaded and sun-kissed lounge spots, a glittering infinity pool, and a convenient poolside bar (chin chin) – it’s all very zen. When it comes to picking rooms, four are located in the main house – the remainders being a separate guest apartment and pool house – and all (except for those in the guest apartment) have their own private ensuite bathrooms.

Santorini, Greece: Villa Agapi

Villa Agapi is a great choice for those keen to embrace a slower pace of life whilst in beloved Santorini. Far away from the madding crowd, the elegant five-bedroom property is a beacon of calm, comprising a palette of soft, white interiors, complemented by dainty chandeliers and flowing chiffon-ensconced, four-poster beds. Ocean-loving travellers will particularly enjoy the property’s subtle nods to nautical life – from the ship ropes to the flying swallows and shells that adorn the walls of various rooms. Outdoors, you’ll find the spacious pool area, complete with cosy shaded lounge area – a prime position to enjoy golden hour, ouzo at the ready.

Ibiza, Spain: Can Harley

This six-bedroom, six-bath property in Ibiza’s San Thomas has room enough for all the gang. One of the oldest villas on the island, Can Harley has recently been renovated, meaning visitors can enjoy original features (think wooden beams and an expansive terrace) alongside the latest mod cons. Neighbouring Sant Antoni, choose to embrace the White Isle’s livelier side at nearby buzzy bars and restaurants or prioritise calmer spots in the area – coastal walks north of Sant Antoni are something special. After a big night out or a lengthy hike, retreating to Can Harley feels like just rewards. Make best use of the farmhouse-style kitchen before enjoying a moreish meal on the sun-soaked terrace followed by thirty minutes downtime to digest and then, a dip in the generously sized pool.
