Suitcase Series

Suitcase Series: Molly Goddard, Co-Founder Of Desmond & Dempsey

Molly Goddard is one half of creative duo, Desmond & Dempsey: the chicest pyjamas to pack no matter what your next trip entails.

Desmond & Dempsey was born out of Molly and her business partner-cum-husband’s international romance. “I grew up in Australia, Joe the UK. We met in Canada and fell in love in Madrid,” Molly tells us. When she moved to London, her flimsy night gowns from Australia weren’t going to cut it, so she went seeking smart yet weather-appropriate pyjamas that made for a perfect night’s sleep – and so the idea of Desmond & Dempsey was born.

According to Molly, Desmond & Dempsey pyjamas are designed “for the pleasure of leisure.” “Today, when time is the most precious commodity, surely your time off is the greatest luxury,” Molly adds.

Equipped with her Soleia slip nightie, and/or the petrol linen lounge set, we delve into Molly’s suitcase psyche…

What is the first trip you remember taking?

We grew up spending weekends at the beach and in the sun, so the first trip that really felt like a trip was to the snow. We went to Silverstar in Canada just before I started high school. I loved the long flight, packing winter gear, the layering up – everything!

Where or what is your escape?

The sun. A good novel. A really cold alcoholic drink in the shower.

What’s your most memorable trip and why?

So many big life moments and decisions have been made whilst travelling, so answering this feels impossible. I think the most memorable was the first time I went to Mallorca. I was moving to Spain to finish university. I had met Joel the year before, he was living in London and he had organised a week’s holiday before I started. We rented a scooter and would eat peaches every morning from the markets in Sóller. It was my first real taste of Europe as an adult. Everything felt new and exciting, and like everything was possible. It is still one of our most beloved spots in the world.

What is your favourite hotel?

Casa Balandra in Mallorca.

What’s your idea of a luxury holiday?

Freedom. No watches. Long days. Crisp white sheets. Warmth and good food.

Where do you get your holiday inspiration?

Personal recommendations, always.

How do you switch off?

A shower or a bath. I put on my Desmond & Dempsey pyjamas and give my brain a break by journalling.

What is your ultimate bucket-list destination?

A safari.

What’s on your travel playlist?

Young Hearts Run Free by Candi Staton.

What is your jet-lag recovery tip?

I am an Olympic sleeper, so don’t have too much trouble adjusting. If times are desperate, I will listen to a Harry Potter audio book to fall sleep. To wake up, I’ll ideally jump in the sea.

Who is your favourite travel companion?

Joel.

What is your suitcase stalwart?

I have an Olympus Mini Point.

What is your number one packing tip?

Leave room to bring new things home!

What is your most-treasured purchase from your travels?

A jug I bought in Mexico.

Where is home and what are your must-do’s for any tourists visiting?

Whilst I am in London currently, Australia is home. For Australia, my advice is to pick one state to travel too. It’s too big to try and fit it all in on a holiday, and you won’t get to experience one of the best things about Australia: its pace. A really good starting point is the Great Ocean Road.

First thing that comes to your mind…

Hand-luggage essential?

A journal.

Beach or city break?

Beach.

Packing: roll or fold?

Squish!

Music or podcast?

Podcast.

In-flight book or in-flight film?

Book.

Time filler on a long-haul flight?

Sleep.

Holiday tipple of choice?

Spicy margarita

Ultimate holiday treat?

Room service.
