The Beauty Haul Diaries: Marianna Hewitt And Lauren Ireland, Founders Of SUMMER FRIDAYS

Beauty influencers turned entrepreneurs, Marianna Hewitt and Lauren Ireland are the duo we have to thank for the cult-worthy Jet Lag Mask – a true travel beauty bag stalwart to revive skin post-flight.

With backgrounds as beauty influencers, the pair have been privy to the best products the beauty industry has to offer, but still found themselves wanting for products that were easy to use, natural, and aesthetically pleasing for their bathroom cabinets. They launched with the Jet Lag Mask in 2018, which was an instant hit. Ireland says “The product itself is so versatile, and easy to integrate into your everyday routine, while really delivering on its hydration promise.” Drawing on their digital expertise Hewitt adds that “The tube was created with social media in mind. Our tube is in a now iconic blue colour that really stood out in a sea of content online.”

SUMMER FRIDAY’s rise has indeed been meteoric, now spanning serums, eye creams and dewy moisturisers. They have also just unveiled their first SPF: an intelligent tinted formula that blends to your skin tone for a healthy finish, and is laden with squalane and Vitamin E to treat skin as it protects. Hewitt uses it every day: “It is an incredible mineral milk formula and it is the last step of my skincare routine before applying make up.”

With their famous mask, and a coterie of other glow-inducing products in tow, we take a closer look at Hewitt and Ireland’s on-the-go beauty regimes.

What are your must do beauty rituals/treatments before you travel?

Lauren: I always hydrate and love to apply a mask the night before I travel. I’ll apply a heavy layer of our Jet Lag Mask overnight, and I’ll reapply it when I am away.

Marianna: I take a shower then lather on our Summer Silk Nourishing Body Lotion and Babymoon. My skin gets really dry when I fly, so I have to be really moisturised.

How do you adapt your beauty regime when you travel?

L: I bring my everyday basics that I can’t sacrifice. I also love to travel with supplements that support my overall health, like probiotics.

M: I keep the same routine morning and night. Consistency in my skincare routine is really important so I try and use the same products wherever I am.

What is the best way to downsize your beauty products for travel?

L: I bring my minis to save space, and stick to the must-haves: my cleanser, serums, moisturisers, and SPF. I won’t typically travel with special treatments or stronger products — both to save space and to keep it simple while my skin adjusts to varying climates and environments. I always keep my toiletries bag packed and ready to go, so I have my home and travel essentials separate.

M: I keep a travel bag for my toiletries and make-up of all my favourite items so it is always stocked with my must-have beauty products.

Do you prefer to pack travel minis or full-size beauty staples? And why?

L: Always minis for me! It saves a lot of space, and typically I am only gone for three–five days at a time, so minis work well for skin and hair care. If I have an extended trip planned, then I will size up, or simply order my basics to the location I am staying at so I don’t have to travel with full-size products.

M: For travel I usually have minis of everything – even down to my fragrances and toothpaste. It makes it easy to pack my bags, otherwise my suitcase would be all beauty products!

Do you have a regular plane beauty routine?

Lauren: I travel with clean skin, and very little make-up – usually just concealer and lip balm. When I get on the plane, I love to apply our Jet Lag Mask on my under-eyes and anywhere else I feel dry – this helps keep my skin hydrated while I fly. I also drink a lot of water on the flight. Just before landing, I use a facial spray to awaken my skin, and apply a cheek tint for a little beauty boost before getting off the plane.

Marianna: I do my body and skincare routine before I get to the airport and bring a few minis in my carry-on bag.

How do you unwind on holiday?

Lauren: I have two little ones, so unwinding looks a little different now! It’s a lot of fun though, and there’s nothing better than unplugging while with my family. I try to take a few days off from checking emails and indulge in the present. I also aim to stick to some of daily rituals that keep my mind and body feeling good: movement, staying hydrated, and taking daily vitamins.

Marianna: I usually bring a fiction book with me and it really helps me relax and get off my phone. I try to limit using my phone on vacations, so I can really be present.

How do you overcome jet-lagged skin/eyes when you land?

Lauren: Our Jet Lag Mask was literally born out of this need, because both Marianna and I wanted something that made us look a little less sleepy than we typically felt from travelling often. Our mask is incredible when worn overnight, and I’ll always apply a thicker layer all over just before I go to sleep. For eyes – I always travel with eye drops in my carry-on to help ease redness.

Marianna: Before I fly internationally I look at the time of where I am travelling to and I try to get on that schedule a day in advance. If it’s day time when I arrive, I stay really active and busy so I don’t get too tired.

What has been you favourite vacation spa so far and why?

Both: The spa at Amangiri in Utah is incredible; the sounds, the textures, and the treatments. The space itself is so serene and it feels worlds away.

What are your top skincare make-up/hair tips when travelling?

Lauren: Always wash your face before bed and hydrate often. Also, choose products that you know work well on your skin, especially while travelling, when our skin is more prone to breakouts. A lip/cheek/eye tint is a game changer for me. Blow-dry your hair the day before you leave, and it usually lasts a few days with dry shampoo and texture spray. I also love to give my hair a heat break while travelling, and I use a wave spray and oils on days I don’t style my hair.

Marianna: Keep your skincare routine consistent when you travel. Drink lots of water. If you’re going somewhere cold or dry, ask the hotel for a humidifier for your room. For make-up, I love the Charlotte Tilbury setting spray. I was just in 90F+ heat and it helped my make-up last all day.

What’s on your beauty wish list right now?

Lauren: Treatments! I love getting regular facials, but I often fall behind on my schedule. I also love LED masks and want to get a portable one to use more routinely on my skin.

Marianna: The new Dyson Airwrap.
