Suitcase Series

Suitcase Series: Tess Corvaia, Co-Founder Of Lack Of Color

If you haven’t heard of Australian hat brand, Lack Of Color, it’s time to get acquainted.

Founded by Tess Corvaia and Robert Tilbury, Lack Of Color was born out of a desire to create cool and stylish hats – a somewhat overlooked accessory. ‘Hats are second nature in Australia’, Tess tells us. ‘I think pretty much every person has a spare hat in their car or in their bag. They’re an essential part of what it is to be Australian: enjoying and living our best lives under the sun and cherishing the outdoors.’

With a distinctly retro aesthetic, Lack Of Color has stealthily been garnering a legion of influencer fans, most recently spotted on the best-dressed attendees of Coachella.

Equipped with a bucket hat, as it’s ‘an easy travel companion and can be packed, worn and washed with ease’, we take a look at Tess Corvaia’s travel psyche.

What is the first trip you remember taking?

The first trip I remember taking was a road trip to Byron Bay for Bluesfest. We would do it every year. We used to camp for about a week around the festival with four other families. It was just such a cool time grooving between the festival, the campsite, the beach, and everywhere in between. We did this for almost 20 years, since I was two years old.

Where or what is your escape?

Driving down the east coast of Australia to a little surfing town near Yamba. Surf, sun, beach walks, long baths, reading books, and completely switching off from the outside world is my escape.

If you could go anywhere tomorrow it would be…

Hawaii or Japan.

What’s your most memorable trip and why?

Our trip to France in 2017: we love architecture and we were so excited to shoot in Villa Goupil in Chevreuse. This was my first time going to Europe and everything was so serene and beautiful. It was such a great trip, and we were constantly in awe of France’s beauty.

What is your jet-lag recovery tip?

If I find out, I’ll let you know! Because we fly from Australia to all kinds of destinations, there’s pretty much always a bit of jet-lag involved. It’s always best to adapt to the local time zone physically as quickly as you can.

Who is your favourite travel companion?

Rob of course! Going anywhere together immediately makes it fun, and we always have fun on our own little adventures.

What is your suitcase stalwart?

My Acne scarf to keep warm when the plane gets freezing.

What is your number one packing tip?

Write a list of everything first, lay it all on your bed, and then tick it off once you’ve packed it.

Home is the East Coast of Australia in a little beach-side town called Tugun. My must-do’s are to explore the natural scenery and landscapes, the ocean, rock pools, and basically just soaking up the sunshine, good vibes, and delicious food and natural wine at many of our amazing restaurants.
