Insider Guide to Hong Kong with Lindsay Jang

Canadian-born Lindsay Jang is based in Hong Kong. The restaurateur and entrepreneur has changed the Hong Kong dining scene, introducing three of its best Japanese-style restaurants, Yardbird, Ronin and Roti Tori

The mother of two is also the brains behind Hong Kong-based beverage company Sunday Spirits; communications agency, Hecho Made; wellness studio, Family Form; and curated one-stop convenience store Sunday Grocery. After 12 years living – and making a life – in Hong Kong, Lindsay knows the city well.

As part of a new series exploring the vibrant destination of Hong Kong, we asked her to share her local knowledge and tell us her favourite spots to visit – from the best cocktails, must-try restaurants, places to find art and more.

In partnership with Hong Kong Tourism Board.

Where is the best place to stay in Hong Kong?

The Upper House. You feel like you’re at home when you’re here, and you can’t beat the location. My fitness studio is located here too.

The restaurant only locals know about:

I can’t claim to be a local but there’s a spot near my house called Hop Sze; it’s so popular that after dining here people rebook on their way out, you have to or you’d never get a seat!

Best place for breakfast or brunch?

One Harbor Road at the Grand Hyatt for dim sum. It’s the best in the city, and the view is unbeatable.

What is your favourite restaurant for dinner reservations?

There are so many: Yakinikumafia is my son’s favourite; Sushi Mamoru serves the perfect omakase in a really great room; and the well-known Estro, which lives up to the hype.

Where is the best place to go shopping in Hong Kong?

The outlets at Horizon Plaza. I go twice a year and always visit Lane Crawford and Joyce.

Tell us about a great locally-run store that we should know about…

Kelly & Walsh. It’s locally-owned and has the best book selection in Hong Kong.

Favourite place for a cocktail?

The Diplomat which opened in 2020 and went on to be named one of Asia’s Best Bars by 2021. Drinks are solid, art and music are on point, and owner, John Nugent, always leaves you feeling like you’re not sure if he likes you.

What is your favourite view in Hong Kong?

The view from my shower. It overlooks the harbour on the far eastern side.

Where can we find great art?

Everywhere. The galleries at Tai Kwun and the new M+, a museum of contemporary visual culture, are both great places to start.

Tell us a fact about your city that most visitors wouldn’t know…

It’s like New York meets Hawaii.

Best tip for relaxation?

Book a private room at Ten Feet Tall. Gather your friends (or go solo) to get foot massages alongside fresh coconuts.

Best tip for adventure?

You won’t find me doing it, but people love to go coasteering all over the islands. Find a good guide to lead you.

Tell us an insider secret?

Everyone here is friendly, helpful and welcoming.

What is your number one tip for visitors?

Stay an extra one or two days; everyone always extends once they’re here.

What is your favourite memory of Hong Kong?

I’m still making them.
