As we invest in pieces that transcend trends, is it the name-sake monogram or the chic and discreet which comes up top?

The monogram can be seen as a mark of quality and luxury: big house names such as Fendi are known for making a splash and Louis Vuitton’s is likely the most recognisable in history. With that comes heritage; having survived – and thrived – for more than a century.

Yet modesty goes a long way in fashion, too. New York-based handbag brand Savette has fine-tuned minimalism and, along with London accessory label Métier, is the epitome of luxury, while The Row – by minimalist icons Mary-Kate and Ashley Olsen – is so discreet, you won’t find a logo in sight. The twins don’t even front their own line and originally wanted to remain anonymous.

Fashion-lovers will easily spot a so-called ‘unidentifiable’ bag: we’d see a Bottega Veneta ‘Jodie’ or Saint Laurent ‘Sac De Jour’ from a mile off. But which do you prefer?
