EAT HERE Hyde Park Garden at Mandarin Oriental

A beautiful, leafy oasis right in the heart of the capital, Hyde Park Garden at the Mandarin Oriental London is where you’ll find the most stylish locals and visitors seeing out Summer ’23. This quintessentially British garden is situated in the Royal Park itself and during your visit you’ll likely see the household cavalry parading right past your table in all their finery. The menu is equally enchanting – designed by the Dinner by Heston Blumenthal team, its dishes are inspired by botanicals found in gardens all around the country, with produce sourced locally, including a great selection of English sparkling wines. Throughout the summer, the Garden will host a series of exclusive events, from wine tasting to a lobster and chips night – go online to find out more. Lucy Halfhead.

BOOK THIS David Hockney: Drawing from Life, National Portrait Gallery

The National Portrait Gallery has announced a major Autumn exhibition, David Hockney: Drawing from Life, running from 2 November 2023 to 21 January 2024. Previously displayed for just 20 days before the Gallery’s closure due to Covid, the exhibition has now been expanded. The updated exhibition will feature 160 works from public and private collections across the world, as well as from the David Hockney Foundation and the artist himself. It explores Hockney’s work over six decades, showcasing his diverse stylistic approaches, predominantly through his intimate portraits of five sitters from his mother to his former partner and curator. Over the past sixty years, the artist’s experimentation with drawing has taken many different turns, revealing his admiration for both the old and modern masters, from Holbein to Matisse. In the 1980s he created photocollages to “draw with camera”. as he described it, more recently returning to the distinctive creations of Rembrandt and van Gogh. Sure to be a popular exhibition, book now before it sells out.
