THE LOWDOWN
Hourglass are known for creating makeup products that subtly transform your skin – whether that’s the multi-award winning blusher and bronzer palettes, or the incredibly popular Vanish Airbrush Concealer. So, when the brand announced the launch of a new skin tint that promises instant glow with lightweight coverage, we knew we had to try it.
Available in 18 shades, the Hourglass Veil Hydrating Skin Tint is best described as a supercharged tinted moisturiser, promising long-lasting sheer coverage that softens the appearance of redness and blemishes. Falling firmly into the makeup with skincare benefits category, the tint contains glowy pigments that instantly boost radiance, plus hyaluronic acid, meadowfoam seed oil and plant-based squalane, all of which keep your skin hydrated while you wear it. No wonder my fellow beauty editors and I have lined it up as our shortcut to a natural-looking summertime glow this year.
TRIED AND TESTED: OUR BEAUTY EDITOR’S REVIEW
Finding my shade
The first step to trying any foundation is to find your shade, something that, like most people, I can find a bit of a chore. But, unlike many skin tints, the first thing I noticed about this formula is how cleverly Hourglass has considered undertones. It not only stretches the skin colours it can effectively work for, but it blends into your skin really quickly. That’s important when you are working with sheer, lightweight formulas as otherwise they can become patchy over time.
There are four broad tone categories (Fair, Light, Medium and Deep), each with separate products for cool, neutral and warm tones within them, bringing the total to 18 shades. My chosen one was number 5 (Light with Warm Undertones).
Application
You can apply the tint with your fingers, a brush, or a sponge, so it’s designed to be very versatile. I actually found the warmth of my fingers achieved a particularly glowy finish that didn’t require a lot of blending.
Coverage
This tint’s sheer coverage melts into your skin, providing a wash of colour that diffuses out areas of redness or dullness really subtly, without looking greasy or acting like a one-dimensional mask. In fact, it didn’t feel like I was wearing anything at all, until I caught a glance of my skin in the mirror and noticed how healthy and glowing my complexion looked.
Due to the light veil-like texture, I did still use the Vanish Airbrush Concealer to brighten my under-eye area, and to cover some post-breakout marks. But, to my surprise, I found myself using my concealer more sparingly elsewhere to make the most of the tint’s natural-looking glow.
LongevityÂ
Most skin tints I’ve tried before tend to fall down when it comes to longevity, with my redness-prone complexion defeating the coverage by lunchtime, or even after my walk to the office. So I was incredibly pleased that I didn’t feel the need to keep reapplying this formula throughout the day. It also didn’t become patchy across my cheeks – where I tend to be prone to dryness – or change colour (due to oxidising), so it was a longwearing colour match to my skin. Those with oily complexions may want to set the tint with the Veil Translucent Setting Powder, especially around your T-zone, to really maximise how long it lasts.
You can see how it looks on my skin in the photograph before and after applying the tint below:
THE VERDICT
The highlightsÂ
- Makeup with noticeable skincare benefits
- A ticket to instant glow
- Non-drying texture throughout the day
- Ability to apply with fingers or a brush
Things to considerÂ
- For a good colour match, use the online guide to understand your skin’s undertones
- The formula works best for those that prefer sheerer coverage
The final word
If you love the sound of lightweight, glow-boosting coverage that still has the ability to conceal areas of high colour – and, frankly, who doesn’t – the Hourglass Veil Hydrating Skin Tint is a great solution for the summertime and beyond. The standout for our beauty editor was its longevity; it didn’t go patchy or need to be constantly reapplied to recapture its original glow. You can also use the brand’s Vanish Airbrush Concealer for fuller coverage on areas that may require it.
