What CF's Beauty Editor Is Shopping This September

With a host of new products passing across her desk each month, Citizen Femme’s beauty editor Becki Murray rounds up the very best September beauty launches that she’s tried, tested, and loved.

As we start the transition to autumn from summer (however much sun you may have seen or not seen this year), these are the best September beauty launches, including the latest trending fragrance from Phlur to boost your mood, and new limited edition lip colours from Hermès. Read on to discover our recommendations.

THE NEW-AGE FOUNDATION

Glossier was the inventor of modern ‘no makeup’ makeup, so the launch of its first-ever foundation was met with understandable excitement. And it delivers. In fact, it's like the Goldilocks of coverage. Not too glowy, not too matte, and with just enough coverage to blur blemishes, without painting your face like a mask. The addition of skin-hydrating glycerin and squalane are the final winning flourishes.

THE LIMITED EDITION LIP

Hermès has made transitioning your makeup bag from summer to autumn possible in a single swipe, with a fabulous limited edition lip collection. My favourite shade is this warm red-brown that's designed to lift and enhance your summer tan, while adding depth to the darker outfits we tend to favour in the autumn. As always, you can trust Hermès for long-lasting, rich pigments too, so the lip colours tick all the right boxes.

THE TRANSITIONAL SCENT

Part of Penhaligon's magical alchemy-inspired collection, Liquid Love has bottled all the excitement and energy of spotting a handsome stranger from the other side of a dimly lit bar. Think desire, not romance this autumn, as the aroma crackles in the air and on your skin with fiery pink pepper, ginger, chili, and musk. It's unique, but that's precisely why you'll fall in love with it.

THE EYE DEFINERS

With a hyaluronic acid coating providing that all-important slip, for less feathering and tugging on your skin, Laura Mercier's tightlining eye liner pencil is a day-to-evening makeup bag essential. Even if you have what feels like five minutes to refresh your face, these creamy, precise and quick-drying sticks (there's seven shades in total), will give you instant eye definition.

THE BODY WASH

Traditionally body washes tended to be quite easily separated into two camps: the ones you needed (for dryness or breakouts) and those that were actually nice to apply (for example foaming, bubbly textures). Naturium has a rather unique ability to give you both – so there's no wonder its latest solution for tackling body blemishes, including those from your hefty SPF usage during the summer, has become a big hit on social media.

THE UPDATED ICON

Exciting enough to land a coveted spot on our founder's Hotlist this week, Charlotte Tilbury's new water-weight version of the iconic Magic Cream is set to transform your hot weather travels. The bouncy, gel formula absorbs in a flash so it doesn't feel sticky on your skin even in the heat, and it also contains niacinamide and biopeptides to help improve the appearance of pores, uneven texture and redness.

THE ON-TREND SCENT

If you ask a fashion-forward woman what she's wearing fragrance-wise this autumn, my prediction is that this scent from niche fragrance brand Phlur will be the repeated refrain. I particularly love how the fresh, green aroma unfurls and develops on your skin with each sniff, so you never get bored of it. No wonder it has almost immediately sold out online already.

THE AUTUMNAL ESCAPE

Jo Malone London's regular candles can be collectible enough, but add a limited edition scent and suitably sweet stalk-embellished lid, and this particular burner has 'gift of the season' written all over it. The summery aroma of fruity English pear and freesia also has a different effect depending on the temperature outside. It's sweet and enveloping in the fleeting sunshine, and pure fresh escapism when the weather is bad.

THE STRESS-RELIEF OIL

A nourishing face oil can do wonders for your skin post-summer, especially if, like me, you are prone to showcasing the results of stress – namely redness and dryness – via your complexion. Dr. Maryam Zamani, who sees a lot of people with those concerns in her clinic come autumn, now has a luxurious solution: this antioxidant and omega-rich oil that also contains a soothing cannabinoid complex to replenish dehydrated, sore skin.

THE CONVERSATION STARTER

Want to start a conversation with your next fragrance? Miller Harris' Black Datura will allow you to do so in spades. Think dark and sensual, (a modern twist on a classic Tom Ford if we may say so), with heady florals like tuberose and ylang-ylang, combined with musks, balsams and white lily. One thing's for certain: it will last all evening long.

THE LIP PLUMPER

Our fashion editor and I are a little obsessed with lip products at the moment, and I have another one to add to our growing list. Saie's Glossybounce nourishing oil plumps using hyaluronic acid, locks-in moisture with jojoba oil, and offers a glossy finish without the stickness. Plus, there's just enough balmy colour to define your pout in a single swipe.

Our fashion editor and I have a long list of lip products we love, but this one from Saie is really getting our beauty hearts racing this month thanks to its glossy, non-sticky shine.

THE SPOT SOLUTION

Trust Rihanna to make even breakouts a little less stressful, with this spot-reducing powerhouse that utilises a facialist's favourite decongesting ingredient, salicylic acid. What I like most is that normally salicylic acid is found in face wash products, which can help oily complexions, but can irritate combination skin by worsening dry patches. Instead, apply this jelly textured-formula just where you need it for quick redness-and-oil-reducing results.

THE OVERNIGHT SAVIOUR

I applied this as an overnight treatment and loved waking up in the morning to a plumper, hydrated pout. In fact, its the sort of lip balm that actually wants to help you stop using so much lip balm. The secret is that it doesn't just contain ingredients that sit on your lips for basic moisturisation. Instead, they penetrate a little deeper to ensure that lip dryness doesn't return immediately.

THE SCENT TO SHARE

Sharing your fragrance wardrobe with the man in your life is an emerging autumn/winter trend this year, and the aroma equivalent of your beau giving you their jacket to wear. Embrace the matchy-matchy trend with this delightfully playful yet intense fragrance that you'll both fall in love with. The traditional masculine accords of raw tobacco and oud wood are given new life and femininity through the sweetness of honey and vanilla.
