Suitcase Series: Sameera Azeem of GHOST

Loved by women for their feminine aesthetic and minimalist silhouettes, it’s likely you already own a piece from Ghost.

The established London-based fashion house is celebrating forty years as a brand, and is synonymous with its satin slip dresses and contemporary vintage feel.

Here, Ghost’s Creative Director, Sameera Azeem, speaks to Citizen Femme about the city she fell in love in, her favourite hotel in Goa and where she’s off to next.

What is the first trip you remember taking?

A family trip as a child to Islamabad, Pakistan to meet my extended family. I remember being overwhelmed with the hustle and bustle of the city, but at the same time being surrounded by beautiful mountains and a lush green landscape.

What’s been your most memorable trip and why?

A city break in Barcelona. My husband and I took a last minute trip and stayed at the beautiful Gran Hotel La Florida in Mount Tibidabo, which had the most incredible views of the city. We fell in love and decided to get married the following year in the church next to the hotel, Temple Expiatori del Sagrat Cor. We hired the hotel for the wedding and had the most amazing wedding reception above the city.

Where or what is your escape?
Yoga is my escape. I love going to Indaba studio in Marylebone.

What’s the biggest lesson you’ve taken from your travels?

Check the size of your toiletries in your hand luggage, as I have made the mistake of having my expensive creams thrown in the bin by security for being slightly too big.

If I could go anywhere tomorrow, I’d go to:

Paris and take a walk around the cobbled streets of Le Marais, with its beautiful boutique shops and cafés.

How would you spend your ideal afternoon in your home city?

I live in Guildford and am lucky enough to be surrounded by the countryside. Taking a walk with the family and the dog in the Surrey Hills with a pub lunch afterwards is my perfect afternoon.

What’s your idea of a luxury holiday?

Staying in a hotel that has a history and character. A place that is more than a place to stay.

Where do you get your holiday inspiration?

Fashion and culture are so interlinked, that it is hard not to be influenced by destinations when researching new collections.

If you could sit next to anyone – dead or alive – who would it be?

My mother. My mother passed away about 10 years ago and I would do anything to have her sit next to me again.

How do you recover from jet lag?

I try to recover from jet lag by changing my sleep schedule to the new time zone. Also, I try to avoid drinking caffeine on flights, but drink as much water as I can.

What’s your in-flight beauty routine?

Hydrating serum, moisturiser and an SPF. If my skin is particularly dry, I will use Drunk Elephant Virgin Marula Facial Oil.

Your flight’s delayed an hour and your phone’s out of battery. How do you pass the time?

Shopping.

Favourite hotel?

Taj Holiday Village Resort & Spa, Goa. I love the Indo-Portuguese architecture and it has an incredible beach on one side and landscaped gardens on the other.

Favourite airline?

Virgin – the inflight service is always good and so is the customer service.

What’s on your travel playlist?

Gil Scott-Heron, I was lucky enough to see him play live in New York and ever since then he has been on my go to playlist.

Where next?

Tuscany. I’m staying at a friend’s place called La Fornance Montisi.
