Gemma, Citizen Femme’s Fashion Editor, has just returned from 10 days travelling around the Amalfi Coast.
At 14 weeks pregnant with twins, she had to find outfits that were comfortable yet stylish for her Italian adventure.
Here she tells us all about the pieces she packed, the pieces she rewore and the items she relied on for fail-safe holiday style.
Tell us about your holiday?
My boyfriend and I took a 10-day road trip around the Amalfi Coast, which was booked well before we knew I was pregnant! It’s a destination that has always been on our wish list, and I’m so glad we got to do it just the two of us, before there are babies in tow! It’s not a very child-friendly place with so many stairs, and the roads are so narrow – we rented a Fiat 500 to see us through the trip in Italian style.
What was on your itinerary?
Lots of different places! We flew to Naples, where we spent one night in a boutique hotel before driving down to Sorrento for two nights and checking into the charming boutique hotel La Minervetta, with a cliff-top setting and stunning views of Marina Grande – I loved the modern Mediterranean decor and authentic feel. Next, we made our way to Capri and checked into Jumeirah Capri Palace, a luxurious island resort in the town of Anacapri. Positano was next, and we stayed at Il San Pietro Positano, a historic five-star hotel with views of the Amalfi Coast and direct access to its own private beach. Ravello was our final stop and probably my favourite. We stayed at the beautiful Palazzo Avino, the iconic pink-hued hotel famed for romance.
How did you decide what to pack for your trip?
Because we were away for a week and a half and moving around a lot, I really wanted easy outfits and pieces I could mix and match. I always research the hotels I am staying at and try and match the vibe of the place with my clothes. For Palazza Avino, known for its bright pink decor, I knew I wanted to pack my linen set from Second Summer, it was the perfect opportunity!
Where did you find inspiration for your outfits?
As a fashion editor, I spend most of my time looking at new season lookbooks from brands and shopping platforms, and scrolling through social media to see what everyone is wearing. I always save outfits I like on Instagram and take inspiration from them, using what I already have in my own wardrobe.
What did you pack?
Lots of linen! I had to choose comfortable clothes, not only for the heat but for my growing bump! I wore my Deiji Studio’s linen co-ord a lot. It comes with me on any trip. I wanted stretchy dresses for the evening because my belly is always bigger after I have eaten (!) and they are comfortable to sit in for long periods. I only packed one bag, my Loewe raffia beach bag which is perfect for day to night, and I lived in these simple brown leather flip-flops from Tkees. For accessories, I wore my YSSO gold statement earrings most nights, and this pearl necklace from By Alona.
What is your favourite piece or outfit that you wore while there?
This green dress from French brand Tressé. The colour, the crochet, the halterneck cut – it was so comfortable but made me feel good too. I wanted to make the most of wearing slinky dresses while I can!
What’s the dress code like at the Amalfi Coast?
I found that everyone was dressed much more relaxed (more like tourists!) than I had envisioned, but I still wanted to exude a subtle Italian elegance.
Did you rewear or restyle outfits, or did you pack a different outfit for each day?
I wore my white crochet trousers from Rails almost every day, they are so comfortable and so easy to style. They had a stretchy waistband and were lightweight, perfect for the hot Italian sun. I tried to pack a different evening outfit for each dinner we had booked, but during the day I restyled some pieces. My Hunza G domino swimsuit was a life saver; it’s so soft and stretchy and great for anyone pre- or post-baby as it’s one-size-fits-all.
