Located in the central town of Attard, a mere 20 minutes from Malta International Airport, Corinthia Palace is somewhat of a legend.
Opening in 1986, this illustrious hotel in Malta’s San Anton district is the founding property of hotel group Corinthia, who today have hotels across Europe and the Middle East.
The Presidential Palace and San Anton Gardens are a stone’s throw away, but the hotel’s own grounds are idyllic in their own right; with court-yarded greenery and fountains the grand entrance feels exclusive – but the magic starts when you step inside.
The Vibe
Corinthia Hotel started life as a 19th century villa and served as a restaurant (Villa Refalo), before being transformed into a stunning palace hotel. Despite the history and opulence of this Grand Dame hotel, a laid-back atmosphere still prevails – striking the ideal balance between upscale yet relaxing. A 2023 refurbishment saw the marble lobby elevated into a harmonious central hub which is as much about relaxing and dining as are its neighbouring restaurants.
The Rooms
Last year’s refurbishment also saw 16 rooms and three suites get a comprehensive makeover, offering a fresh atmosphere and luxury aesthetic (that the other rooms are lacking). Book into a Deluxe Room, Deluxe Suite or Grand Suite where marble bathrooms, a walk-in wardrobe and a spacious living room will make you feel right at home – these are ideal rooms to relax in after a day of exploring the historic sites. Elegant, neutral tones and an airy atmosphere immerses you in sophistication and serenity, and the suites have a private balcony with loungers – a dreamy spot to relax with a glass of wine as you watch the sun set.
The Food + Drink
There are only seven Michelin-starred restaurants in Malta, and the Corinthia Palace is home to one of them, Bahia. Serving the best of Malta’s gastronomy, this innovative dining experience is outstanding and chef Tyrone Mizzi offers two tasting menus; The Villages Journey serving plates inspired by Malta’s many villages, and the self-explanatory Plant-Based menu. Elsewhere, famed Italian chef Francesco Mazzei has a residency at Villa Corinthia, the hotel’s main dining room. Here, he reinvents Maltese ingredients to create an exciting menu of Italian classics rooted in traditional flavours, while drawing inspiration from local, seasonal produce.
The Spa
The Anthenaeum Spa – complimentary for hotel guests – is a blissful retreat in the hotel’s gardens. There’s a sauna, steam room, hydro pool and heated marble beds, and while the treatment menu is extensive, the Ayurvedic experiences come up top with natural oils and ancient practices aiding the balance of mind, body and soul. Book in advance. Don’t miss the Vitality Suite either, a special addition to the spa and an adult-only experience within a semi-private oasis, encompassing a cosy courtyard plus small pool and loungers.
The Little Extras
Josephine’s pioneering plant-based café is the newest addition to the hotel. Found in the lobby, a delicious menu of vegan treats is on offer between 7.30am – 8.00pm, served on comfy indoor sofas or at the terraced garden oasis. The Tropical Acai Berry Bowl, Raw Pad Thai Salad and Oyster Mushroom Shawarma are not to be missed. Grab a matcha latte on your way out in the morning, or retire at the hotel with freshly baked cakes and afternoon tea.
The To-Do List
Discover the charm of the old town of Valletta, with small streets and colourful wooden shutters on residential homes. The Upper and Lower Barrakka Gardens are worth a visit, both relaxing spots to soak up the scenery. Take a Maltese water taxi around the Grand Harbour – the small colourful boats are Malta’s version of a gondola. The Tal-Mixta Cave is worth the hike too: you walk up a rather steep cliff face from the beach – it’s not for the faint-hearted, but worth it for the magnificent views.
