Mum-of-two Julie Andersen tells Citizen Enfants why Copenhagen is a great place to travel with children – and gives us the inside track on where to stay, eat, and hang out when visiting.
Scandinavian brand Wheat has become a go-to kids’ clothing company for parents looking for a cool aesthetic combined with practical designs. Here the label’s director, Julie Andersen, shares her favourite hotels, restaurants, tips and things to do with (and without) children in the Danish capital.
I’m Julie Andersen, brand director at Wheat. Mother to Viggo, age five and Fred, age four. We lived in Østerbro for many years and now live just north of Copenhagen in Gentofte. I work in Copenhagen regularly, and often take the kids there too.
Why is Copenhagen a wonderful family destination?
Because it has so many kid-friendly attractions. The city’s emphasis on bike-friendly infrastructure makes it easy to explore with children. Plus, it’s safe.
When is the best time to visit Copenhagen with children?
During the summer months, particularly from May to September when the city comes alive with various outdoor activities. But spring and autumn are also lovely (with less crowds) and even in winter Copenhagen has a cosy charm that I love.
Which hotels should we check into for a family-friendly stay?
Villa Copenhagen holds a special place in my heart; it’s such a beautiful hotel in a great location. It welcomes kids, is centrally located, and the infinity pool adds a touch of luxury.
Where should we take kids for breakfast?
Our family loves starting the day at Wulff & Konstali’s for brunch. With a variety of dishes to suit everyone (even fussy little ones!) it’s a great spot to go to with kids.
What are the sights to see with children?
Statens Museum for Kunst is a must-visit for us. The children’s workshop there allows kids to really engage with art in a playful hands-on way. Perfect for a rainy day.
Where can we take them to play?
Tivoli Gardens is a favourite for our family. It’s one of the oldest amusement parks in the world and a must-visit if you find yourself in Copenhagen with kids. There are loads of new rides, but it also has a historic charm that I personally think adds an extra layer of magic. There’s something for children of all ages, plus there are cafes and places to let little ones run around – so it’s an overall good day out.
Your favourite family-friendly restaurants?
Frankies Pizza and Bette Café are our go-to spots for family dining. They are both super welcoming of kids and have a really relaxed atmosphere – which is what parents are looking for when taking little ones out for dinner. The food is reliably delicious; kids love it. Pizza is always a winner no matter where you are in the world!
The place only local parents know about?
Trafiklegepladsen in Fælledparken. It’s hard to explain but it’s a child-sized ‘traffic playground’ with scaled-down roads and traffic signals – it’s a great place to learn to ride a bike, or to practice. You can borrow bikes from them.
Where do you shop for your kids in Copenhagen?
Vesterbro, a neighbourhood of small shops. There’s lots of boutique stores here, plus plenty of great kids stores dotted around.
And to shop for yourself?
I enjoy browsing through the racks at iBlameLULU or Aiayu for sustainable fashion options.
If mums have a few hours sans enfants where should they go?
Ara’Kai Beauty is my go to place when I need some ‘me time’. Their holistic treatments allow me to recharge and reconnect with myself. All mums need that sometimes.
Any top tips for visiting Copenhagen with children?
Be sure to explore the city by bike – it’s a fun and eco-friendly way to discover hidden areas. You can rent bikes from many places (they also have child seats) and it’s a wonderful way to get around with little ones.
