At the Biscuiteers Little School Of Icing, little ones can don their aprons and take up their piping bags to create delicious mini masterpieces that are (almost!) too good to eat.
What could be more fun than icing your own delicious biscuits that come in the cutest shapes – from dinosaurs to bunny rabbits – then taking them home to eat? At the children’s classes run by talented Biscuiteers’ bakers, children can try out their biscuit decorating skills. Citizen Enfants rolled up their sleeves to join in the sugar-coated fun.
What is the Biscuiteers Little School of Icing?
Biscuiteers is the company behind the most beautiful hand-iced biscuits you could ever imagine. Since launching in 2007 they have created hundreds of collections of delicious masterpieces. Each little biscuit is a culinary delight, perfectly shaped and exquisitely iced by their team of talented bakers and include birthday and wedding tins, seasonal Halloween and Christmas goodies, and collaborations with the Natural History Museum and Paddington Bear. There are all manner of creations including edible flowers, fruit baskets, animal characters and more – if you can think of it, they can ice it. These biscuits are such magnificent little works of art that they are (almost!) too pretty to actually eat. And the great news is that budding bakers can have a go too.
While their famous tins make ideal gifts, you can also create your own designs at the Biscuiteers much-loved School of Icing classes and parties. They host dedicated kids’ sessions for those as young as seven, and even some very simple DIY classes for little ones of just three and up. Held at the icing cafés in both their Notting Hill and Belgravia stores, these wonderful, hands-on masterclasses teach you the techniques used to ice biscuits, including how to line and flood icing, piping and feathering. While that might sound complicated, the expert icing teachers are on hand to guide you through every step, making sure you end the day with a box of stunning biscuits that bakers young and old will be proud of.
Who is it for?
Whether you’re an experienced baker used to decorating cakes, or a complete novice, you can join in with these classes; that’s part of what makes them ideal for children. While some sessions are exclusively for adults (classed as those over 14), kids from as young as seven can take part at the Little School of Icing. Specially designed for young bakers, this hour-long experience is such a fun treat.
You’ll be provided with three of their plain, shaped biscuits (choose from the likes of cars, flowers, dinosaurs or ice-cream cones), edible decorations such as sprinkles, and up to five icing colours. Held in icing cafés that are a separate part of the stores, you’ll be given all the necessary equipment to decorate, alongside an apron. Kids can decorate as they like or follow the design as an expert icing instructor shows everyone how to hold a piping bag, position their hands and how much pressure to apply. Once you’ve finished, your biscuits are popped into a gorgeous hand-illustrated gift box so you can take them home to enjoy later. Or just eat them there and then if you can’t resist.
The Highlights
While the Little School of Icing is the ideal day out for a family or small group, Biscuiteers also host children’s parties that offer even more decorating opportunities and make the perfect birthday treat. Suitable for a group of between four and 25 (with the largest parties accommodated in the Belgravia store), choose your biscuit designs in advance to personalise the party. Party guests will have their own expert icer on hand to teach and guide them throughout (though it’s required that an adult stays too), and each budding baker will receive a Biscuiteers apron and a certificate of ‘Biscuiteers Icing Brilliance’ to take away. Stay a little longer by booking the new Kids’ Afternoon Tea too. And ideal accompaniment to the birthday-party package, little ones will tuck in to a selection of finger sandwiches, freshly baked scones and jam, a drink and, of course, some hand-iced biscuits. Make the day extra special with a bespoke birthday cake whipped up by the Biscuteers baking team.
Need to know
Classes can be booked for weekends or week days, and during school holidays Biscuiteers put on extra themed sessions. In October expect to decorate Halloween bats and pumpkins at the Haunted House class; in December it will be gingerbread houses, Christmas trees and baubles – there’s even characters from Raymond Brigg’s classic tale The Snowman. These creative tutorials are great for children aged seven and above, who can enjoy the decorating process – not just eating the icing! Each class or party lasts around an hour – or longer if you add on the Afternoon Tea.
