EAT + DRINK

Sugar Bistro At The Heritage

Located on a bustling corner of Galle Fort, Sugar Bistro At The Heritage combines exceptional food with a rich historical backdrop. Housed in a building that was once the National Bakery – which featured the first wood-fired brick oven in southern Sri Lanka – the bistro celebrates its heritage with a carefully preserved oven that dates back nearly 300 years. The bistro’s whimsical atmosphere is enhanced by unique art pieces, including the world’s first Elephant Tuk Tuk, crafted from hand-hammered solid brass by artist Prageeth Manohansa. This blend of art and history creates a charming dining experience. While the focus here is creativity, the food is equally impressive, featuring fresh pizzas, vibrant vegetarian dishes, and signature rice and curries. Open every day of the year, Sugar Bistro invites guests to enjoy a meal enriched by the stories and artistry of its surroundings.

There’s something about sitting by the ancient walls, watching the world go by, with a chilled Lion beer and a Puttanesca pizza topped with olives and capers. For seafood fans, the Pescatora is a solid choice. And if the weather’s on your side, grab an outdoor table; it’s the best seat for people-watching while you dig into a little slice of Italy.

If you’re craving something fresh post your explorations of Galle Fort, MARU is the spot. Their poké bowls are made using fresh daily catch from the Indian Ocean; it’s the perfect example of boat-to-table sustainability. With a low-key vibe and a menu that leans into coastal freshness, MARU feels like an extension of Galle’s charm. For seafood lovers, the Hot Pani Prawn bowl is hard to beat – it’s loaded with prawns, avocado, mango, and a colourful mix of bell peppers, cabbage, and more. For vegans, we recommend the Soy Glazed Tofu bowl.

The Tuna & the Crab, by celebrated chef Dharshan Munidasa, serves a unique blend of Japanese cuisine with a Sri Lankan twist. While their delicate sushi and sashimi are definitely worth trying, don’t miss the seven-course teppanyaki menu, or one of their thoughtfully crafted bento boxes for a well-rounded experience.
