With her own line of belts, Taljé, as well as a second exclusive collaboration with Scandinavian brand Malina, Anouk tells us about her must-have pieces from the collections, her hero buys for long-haul travel, her most memorable adventures, and reveals the city break she’s plotting for 2025.

What is the first trip you remember taking?

To Italy – close to Rome – in the early ’90s, to celebrate the summer holiday with my aunt, my parents and my little brother. You were still allowed to smoke on the plane, and my mother carried a plastic beauty case. Very retro.

What’s been your most memorable trip and why?

We spent all our summer holidays in Italy with family and I have very warm memories of this time. We’d go to the Castelli Romani region, about a 30-minute drive from Rome, which was a bit forgotten and not very touristy, making it so special. We would eat home-cooked Italian meals most of the time, including porchetta – I usually don’t eat pork, but I make an exception for this as my aunt is a great cook. Castelli Romani is still a very special place and I returned for a family reunion last year.

Where or what is your escape?

I love to go to Portugal – Lisbon, Melides, Sintra, Nazaré. I love the laid-back vibe there, as well as the food and the people – plus the nature is very beautiful.

What’s the biggest lesson you’ve taken from your travels?

Always read the signs and always be aware. I’m very sharp when I travel, I’ll scan a plane for instance. A few weeks ago there were a group of very loud and drunk men on my flight. I’d already calculated the chairs…and realised I had to sit next to them. I went straight to the air steward and asked him very politely if he had another seat for me. The problem was solved without them even knowing I didn’t want to sit beside them.

If I could go anywhere tomorrow I’d go to:

Stockholm. It’s my happy place. I know the city well because we lived there, and we still have a bunch of friends there. Visiting is like coming home. My favourite area of the city is called Vasastan; it’s where most of our friends live and has wonderful coffee shops, restaurants, and little cool concept stores. Acne Studios has their archive store here too, which you have to visit when you’re in town.

How would you spend your ideal afternoon in your home city?

I love to go for hikes. We live in a natural reserve (just outside of Groningen, in the Netherlands), so I often go for a long walk in the forest, followed by a large bowl of soup. I don’t often go to the city but if I do then Bar Barrie in Groningen is a must, it’s a small bistro with a very Parisian feel. I love the stores around De Folkingestraat, as well as Japanse Man for beautiful hand-made Japanese ceramics; his studio is worth visiting and he also hosts matcha tea ceremonies in the summer months. I love Paais too – their toasted banana bread with peanut butter and pecans is so good, as is their coffee. For dining I love Restaurant De Haan

What’s your idea of a luxury holiday?

Architecture, good food, design. I love off-grid places: a beautiful small hotel where the focus is about the experience of quality through aesthetic and design rather than in-your-face luxury.

Where do you get your holiday inspiration?

Travel magazines, I often buy some when I’m at the airport.

If you could sit next to anyone on a flight – dead or alive – who would it be?

My fiancé, we’ve been together for 22 years. He’s the one that makes me laugh the hardest.

How do you recover from jet lag?

Just go with the flow; a cold turkey, back to normal life routine.

What’s your in-flight beauty routine?

No makeup, and Biologique Recherche’s Crème Masque Vernix. It’s very hydrating and leaves your skin with a glow.

Your flight’s delayed an hour and your phone’s out of battery. How do you pass the time?

Have dinner instead. Sit down and see the world pass by – there’s always a lot to see in an airport.

Favourite hotel?

I really like small boutique hotels, preferably from the likes of Mr & Mrs Smith. But also any of the Four Seasons hotels. I also love the very chic Hôtel Crillon le Brave in the Provence region

Favourite airline?

Singapore Airlines. We used to fly with them to Rome and it was such a treat.

What’s on your travel playlist?

I never listen to music, I usually just watch a movie to pass the time.

What are your must-have travel picks?

My Scandi-style knits from my second collection with Malina. The cashmere blend knit is perfect for travel days and the faux fur scarf is so warm, cozy and chic – it also doubles as a good pillow! I love my Lululemon leggings and I usually wear my Santoni loafers. I also need to have my Bose earbuds for the best noise cancellation.

Where next?

Barcelona for three nights – a little getaway with the kids. We’re staying at Nobu hotel.

FIRST THING THAT COMES TO MIND…

Hand-luggage essential?

Aesop lip balm.

Packing: roll or fold?

Always roll.

Inflight book or inflight film?

Film, I’m lazy. I find it hard to stay awake during a flight.

Music or podcasts?

Podcasts. I like to learn.

Time killer on a long-haul flight?

Deleting old photos.

Bucket list top destination?

Japan. We are currently saving up for it.

Beach or City?

Beach. One time we literally ran out of Los Angeles – we were so fed up with the traffic, the kids were being very annoying and we were just not feeling it. We changed the day – and the vibe – by heading to the first beach down south (Long Beach, if I remember). The whole energy shifted.

Ultimate holiday treat?

Eating local candies in a hotel bed while watching a movie.
