The Year In Review: Travel, Style, Beauty, Wellness, Enfants

Wellness is thriving, seeing such a huge trend for our readers and our team in 2024. It’s been a year of exciting growth, yet always managing to find time to focus on one’s self.

Whether we want to treat ourselves to the best getaways for romantic encounters (read: best hotels for sex, perhaps unsurprisingly one of the most popular articles of the year), or aligning our travel plans with our horoscope (yes, it’s a thing). Plus, maximising our travel however and wherever we can to capitalise on our personal growth, not just for a holiday, but to increase our own capacity for learning, cultural immersion or simply broadening our horizons – its been an absolute treat to share with you these invaluable experiences. What’s to come? Well, more – bigger and better. We’re not talking regular wellness, we’re not exploring plain old holidays, 2025 is about elevating every element of your travel experience, adulting in the best way possible.

TRAVEL

2025 has been a big year for presidential changes – half of the global population had elections this year, including the UK and USA. Elsewhere, years of protests led to governmental change; most recently in Syria, but also in Sri Lanka. Such monumental changes can affect the way we explore a country, but most importantly it affects the way our travel dollars filter through to those who live there. 2024 was one of Sri Lanka’s best years for tourism; a topic we’ve explored here

Closer to home, Greece has had an exceptionally good 2024, with an estimated 35 million people visiting, beating their previous record (2023). It’s no wonder our article on the best Greek islands to visit was the most-read piece site wide. Read up now for next year, and keep your eye out for new entries too – we have more islands to add in 2025. Wellness too, has been a huge trend in 2024, and it extends beyond the spa: our article on astrotourism was one of the most read pieces in our travel section this year – a trend we predicted in January 2024, as a way of appreciating life away from the laptop. Food has also been a really big deal for our readers, with pieces about vegan restaurants, solo dining and New York’s hotel restaurants resonating.

In 2025, we’ll see continued interest in outdoorsy and foodie escapes, as well as a further shift away from busy cities towards less-crowded places; be this due to off-season travel, or (increased) interest in second cities. Last, but not least – all signs point to cooler destinations triumphing next year after a few years of extreme heat in places such as Portugal, Italy and Greece. Perhaps we need to create an additional list for Greece – documenting the best places to visit during its cooler months. Watch this space. – Katie Silcox, Managing Editor.

STYLE

It was the year when quiet luxury came head to head with the boho renaissance. The popularity of our suede tote bag edit indicated that you still have a penchant for understated polish, but elsewhere in fashion land, romantic, whimsical styles went stratospheric, led by Chemena Kamali’s Chloe show and Sienna Miller, who also introduced the world to another key 2024 trend, barrel-leg jeans. There are some things that never lose their allure though, and you told us that Paris was still eternally appealing – Mathilde Favier insider’s city guide and Jeanne Damas’ tips on Paris’ most romantic dinner spots were both among the fashion section’s most read. It’s a similar story with New York – you loved reading celebrity stylist Jordan Foster’s take on what to do in the Big Apple in autumn, as well as Jordanna Sharp’s advice on the city’s best shops. This was also the year that many of you considered Saudi Arabia as a holiday destination, proven by the success of our guide on what to wear there. We promise to give more expert takes on how to dress in conservative countries in the coming months to make packing that bit easier.

Next year promises more sartorial maximalism, a stark contrast to the low-key comforts that previously dominated; your suitcase will be full of colour, fluid fabrics and billowing silhouettes. Mary Janes will pick up where ballet flats left off, which is handy as they’re comfortable footwear solutions for city breaks. From airport style inspiration to the best accessories for travelling solo, we’ll be on hand to break down the looks and investments you need for every type of trip you have planned for 2025. – Ella Alexander, Fashion Features Director.

BEAUTY AND WELLNESS

Mindfulness was at the core of beauty and wellness in 2024 – as we took the time to reconsider exactly what we wanted from our routines. Conscious consumerism was at an all-time high, triggering a welcome trend towards nourishing products that sought long-term results, and it follows that hand creams, at-home manicures and skin-boosting beauty tech were constantly being added to CF reader’s shopping baskets this year. (Our guides to the best European beauty brands and how to shop the French pharmacies were always on hand to get you the very best recommendations too).

We launched our beauty businesswoman series in 2024, where inspiring individuals reveal their pathways to success and ultimate beauty advice. So, if you want something to read in the airport lounge this January, we’d recommend our chat with the founder of FaceGym Inge Theron and fragrance entrepreneur Tara Derakshan’s investigation of the mind-boosting powers of perfume (set to be a big 2025 trend). As for spa inspiration, you can’t go wrong with booking our hottest destinations of 2024 – Amsterdam and Marrakech, but you also loved our more advice-led spa content too. Our best of the best guides – including the ever-popular most romantic spa days – are going nowhere (don’t worry), but we have you covered if you want to know the best way to enjoy the spa while on your period (or how to solo spa with confidence) now too.

In 2025, the tech revolution looks set to really shake things up, as the worlds of wellness and medicine collide to supercharge our wellbeing, fitness and beauty routines. We’ll be guiding you through it all – from where to book to get ahead of the wellness-seeking crowds to expert interviews and trending news to help you pack the very best products on your travels. That way you can be sure to experience 2025 a little more beautifully… – Becki Murray, Beauty & Wellness Director.

ENFANTS

How do we, as mothers, source information and tips? Often by seeking the advice of others and through a growing network that we build as parents, reliant on other mum’s incredibly useful tried and tested recommendations. It’s this invaluable knowledge that continues to be a huge inspiration for what parents choose to book – from the destination to the hotels. That’s why Citizen Enfants’ Insider Guides, like Hayley Bloomingdale’s guide to Montecito and Julie Andersen’s guide to Copenhagen, have proven to be so popular.

Family travel, while not always easy, is becoming more accessible, and the desire to educate and inform our children through travel is on the rise. We spoke about this with Scott Dunn at our Annabel’s panel talk earlier this year and will be doing so again at Jaego’s House to kick off our series of Citizen Enfants’ events in 2025. Certainly for next year the regularity of trips is increasing as families look to see more of the world together as often as they can. Shorter haul trips in particular are on the rise, with so many luxury properties creating perfect family escapes, adding facilities and programmes that welcome children with open arms. Whether it’s experiences, in-room amenities, or indeed the complete revamp of the ‘all-inclusive’. The latter is an especially huge trend to note for the coming year, with the new wave of all-inclusives truly focusing on luxury. It’s no long mediocre buffets and a check list of activities: this is gourmet à la carte dining, personal butler services, and high-end, bespoke experiences. Plus, of course, the most incredible kids’ clubs with immersive activities, world-class tutors, and so much more. The level of adventure that parents are embracing is set to be a big trend too as they look to try really special and unique trips with their children. We’ve done Florida, we’ve done the Caribbean, and while they are wonderful, we also want to explore something different and new – there certainly is a lot out there for families to enjoy.

So as we move into 2025, we continue to provide plenty of insightful and genuine content, along with all the personal and expert tips and advice that we love to hear from the many inspirational mothers we regularly feature. Most importantly, however, we remain focused on how to make family travel exciting, fun and straightforward, as we raise thoughtful little citizens of the world along the way. – Morag Turner, Citizen Enfants Editor.
