Jane Gottschalk: Eight Golden Rules of Après-Ski Style

If anyone knows how to navigate ski style it’s Jane Gottschalk. As creative director of Perfect Moment, she’s been dressing the fashion set in the brand’s nostalgic activewear for over 15 years.

Her retro ski collections have been worn by Alessandra Ambrosio, Priyanka Chopra and Miranda Kerr to name but a few. We spoke to her about what to wear on the slopes now, but also how to navigate après ski. What makes a perfect outfit for that afternoon hot toddy on a sunny mountain?

None of us want to have to pack more, so what we need are clothes that work doubly hard. Gottschalk is here to share the knitwear with on and off piste mileage, the footwear ideal for chalets and alpine bars and the one compact accessory you need for instant glamour.

Premium basics are as important as outerwear

“Good quality basics are essential for warmth: base layers, socks, gloves are all key – and they’re easy to peel off once you’re back at your lodge by the fire. When it comes to outerwear, it pays to spend more. Skiwear should be an investment and last for years. Being wet and cold on the slopes will ruin the moment and your holiday.”

The 60s Style Icons Did Ski Style Best

“There’s something about 60s glamour on the slopes that worked so well. If you need inspiration look at old photos of Jean-Claude Killy, Jackie O and Audrey Hepburn on their ski holidays.”

The Perfect Ski Jumper Is Merino Wool

“Merino wool feels luxurious, but keeps you warm and more crucially, dry! Look for lightweight jumpers cut to sit on the waist to meet the top of ski pants. I avoid having to tuck bulky or long sweaters into ski pants. Feeling comfortable in skiwear that fits well and is streamlined is key.”

Aim For Three Base Layers

“I wear a base body, technical base and Merino wool sweater underneath my ski suit and jacket. Don’t skimp on these; thin layering will keep you comfortable and warm. Good ski socks are vital, too.”

Stop Fighting The Helmet Hair

“It’s a battle you can’t win. I scrape it back as I would in the gym to workout.”

Contemporary Fabrics Will Stop A Retro Ski Look From Looking Costume

“The introduction of four-way stretch technical fabric has revolutionised ski pants, so we are able to maintain the retro aesthetic and feel whilst giving our customers movement, comfort, slimline fits and premium protection.”

Sunglasses Will Make An Outfit

“Go big and bold on and off the slopes to amp up the glamour. Also, when it comes to après footwear, swap your ski boots for something practical yet more streamlined – I love a moon boot.”

If IRL Skiing Isn’t An Option, Try Faux-Ski

“It’s very possible to achieve the après-ski look wherever you are. All you need is a faux fur cropped jacket or coat, and a coordinating wool set.”
