“Because I’m Worth It,’’ L’Oreal’s most universal mantra, has been its cornerstone for more than fifty years, and one of the most enduring brand slogans in marketing history. The complicated origin story of the iconic phrase was largely unknown until a 2024 short film shed light on the woman behind the words. That unsung trailblazer was copywriter Ilon Specht, one of few women working for the advertising agency McCann (then Mcann Erickson) in the ‘60s and ‘70s. She was only 23 when she boldly challenged the norms of her time and was the first in advertising to champion a woman’s self-worth.
