What To Wear To Every Type Of Beach Wedding

I’m a big believer that the key to any great wedding-guest look is taking the destination as your starting point.

This means not wearing heels if the setting is a field, or a bodycon number if you’re heading somewhere warm. It might sound a little dull, but what is needed from your outfit from a practical point of view? You don’t want your enjoyment of the day to be challenged by the tyranny of a dress not warm enough for the occasion, or a shoe incompatible with cobbled streets. Lean into the location and you won’t go far wrong. A beach wedding is a prime example where the setting should guide the outfit.

Beach weddings can be tricky in that they require a celebration-worthy ensemble that’s also a touch more relaxed than your average ceremony. Finding that balance is hard, but not impossible. Although there is a difference in terms of what you might wear to a wedding in Thailand to another on the Amalfi coast, there are a few commonalities. First things first – forget heels. Consider an espadrille wedge at a push, but use this as an opportunity to wear a great flat – Ancient Greek Sandals offers beautiful satin options if you want to take it up a level, or consider metallics. There are few occasions where you can attend a wedding barefoot; but if the couple getting married are into it, follow suit and make the most of that singular feeling of warm sand between your toes.

In terms of silhouettes, steer clear of anything too form-fitting and make a beeline for clothes that give you space to breathe. Looser shapes also bring a carefree, wanderlust energy that’s ideal for a relaxed seaside affair. It’s also a perfect moment for maxi and midi length styles – anything short and loose risks looking too casual. Linen, tulle and silk are a good idea in terms of fabric; they’re romantic but also comfortable. Think about bright colours – a beach wedding is no place for an LBD – so embrace punchy shades and bold prints. If you’re a more low-key wedding attendee, then consider faded sorbet shades. Head towards resortwear brands such as Johanna Ortiz, Matteau, Farm Rio and Alemais for sunshine-ready looks with a sense of occasion.

Your sunglasses will take a starring role, so give them due thought too. A pair of cat eye shades will instantly bring a jolt of glamour. If you need inspiration, rewatch The White Lotus – any of the three seasons will do – which delivered elevated, yet appropriate holiday looks in spades. H&M’s new collaboration with the show offers looks influenced by the characters.

Let’s talk about bags: size and shape are key. Rattan or straw styles are good, but they shouldn’t be too big or too slouchy. A good rule of thumb is if the bag works for a day lounging on the beach it’s not right for a wedding. You’re looking for structure and something large enough for your phone, shades and a mini sun-cream bottle. Anything larger is too large. I also like the idea of subtly nodding to the beach setting with a bag – Stone and Mason’s structured designs have a beautiful pearlescent finish (I wore one on my wedding day in Sicily), that makes them look like a shell, and Rabanne’s Sparkle navy style has an oceanic feel without being too on the nose.

Now you’ve got your outfit sorted, next stop is sun, sea and sand.
