The Fashion Set Is Obsessed With Socks: Here's 12 Outfit-Completing Pairs

For a very long time, we haven’t given socks the kudos and recognition that they deserve. They lingered in our drawers, faded and sad, often odd, rarely to be seen outside of the house.

Times have changed, and socks, quite rightly, have become fashion’s most democratic accessory. Chanel might be selling silk versions for £790, but there are plenty of affordable alternatives too. Today, they are used as an exclamation point for more understated looks, very much visible, outfit-completing additions that come in varying colours and materials depending on your sensibility. They add idiosyncrasy and playfulness in a very achievable way; the right sock can transform the energy of an ensemble. Also, they prevent blisters, a benefit that cannot be overstated. These are the best fashion socks for 2025.

The autumn/winter 2025 catwalks, including Valentino, Chanel and Rabanne, went big on the idea of a high-fashion sock, but the sock-and-shoe-combination has been building momentum for years now. Miuccia Prada was an early pioneer, often taking her post-show bow in a below-the-knee skirt, socks and heels. Alexa Chung is another fan (she buys hers in the men’s department), as is Jeanne Damas, who likes a ribbed grey style with a prim court shoe. At the Met Gala, this month Doechii was widely applauded for her dapper look that referenced the dandy dress code in a custom Louis Vuitton jacket with matching checkerboard shorts, contrasting mahogany tie and, crucially, a pair of jaunty brown socks.

An easy form of experimentation, there are many ways you can go with a statement sock. Over-the-knee styles deliver an irreverent school-girl air, but make sure your shoes are a different colour – the contrast is important. On the subject of shoes, the great thing about socks is that they go with most of them – they offset a heeled stiletto or court, and also work well poking out of a slingback. A kitten heel with a slouchy sock has a very Prada-esque appeal, while loafers and socks in a finer material feel pleasingly preppy. I have a pair covered in rhinestones found in the V&A gift shop that I like to wear with jeans and a mule. There’s a reason Birkenstocks and socks are so popular among off-duty models and influencers; it’s a nonchalant way of nodding to spring without the risk of freezing toes when the evening cool sets in.

It’s also a perfect airport-style look, relaxed but purposeful. You’ll have warm feet for the AC-infused flight, but they can be whipped off as soon as you arrive at the airport of your sun-drenched destination. I like them as gifts – no longer is it the case that a pair of socks was a dull present for someone you didn’t know very well. Very few women I know would turn their noses up at a black sparkly style, or anything from the Le Bon Shoppe canon. Japanese socks specialist Tabio offers a personalisation service, which makes for even sweeter gifts.

The era of the fashion sock has arrived, and, as far as I’m concerned, it’s way overdue.
