We Asked 3 Dermatologists What Skincare They Actually Use. This Is The Product They Love

Ever wondered what dermatologists – aka true skin experts – use on their own faces? Here’s why three leading names use Klira as their one-and-done solution for everything from wrinkles to sun damage.

There’s no doubt about it. Choosing the right skincare can be tricky, not least because there are so many products out there and it really is difficult to know what will actually work for your skin.

That’s why at every opportunity our beauty director likes to ask skin experts exactly what they use on their own skin. After all, they have to deep dive into the science behind the products as part of their jobs, and if they have deemed it good enough for their complexions, it could work wonders for ours too.

It’s perhaps not surprising then that Klira – which was founded by a consultant dermatologist, Dr Emma Craythorne – is a particular hit with skin experts. The bespoke prescription treatment is designed to simplify and supercharge your skincare routine, with one product delivering all the actives you need in one nightly application.

Intrigued? Here’s how three dermatologists, Dr Emma included, have used Klira to optimise their skin health.

Dr Emma Craythorne: for rosacea

What were your main skin concerns?

Many of the lifestyle choices I made when I was younger – like spending too much time in the sun – led to changes in my skin, including visible UV damage. Alongside that, I also had rosacea, which presented as red bumps on my cheeks and frequent flushing on my nose. These are things that, especially in social settings – like filming my TV show – would make me feel self-conscious during a flare-up.

How did Klira help treat your rosacea and sun damage?

I used to take antibiotics for my rosacea and even had laser treatments. But the thing that truly changed my rosacea was my Klira Special. I haven’t taken antibiotics for rosacea in five years – and that’s entirely down to Klira. I still occasionally have vascular laser once a year, but nothing has made the impact that the Klira Special has.

The same goes for the photo damage. There were marks on my skin from my twenties, and using a prescriptive-grade retinoid with pharmacy-grade ingredients like ivermectin and tretinoin has transformed my skin. I couldn’t tolerate tretinoin before, but with Klira’s formulations, I’ve been able to build up to 0.1%, and I haven’t had a flare in four years.

What do you love most about Klira?

What I love most is the reliability: knowing my skin is stable and, for the first time, I feel like I’m doing the best thing medically – as a dermatologist – to keep my skin at its best. That peace of mind has taken away so much stress. And I love the simplicity. I just apply it at night, and everything I need is in one bottle. No faff. I also love that Klira challenges the typical marketing narratives and brings it back to real science. That makes me feel good about what I’m putting on my skin.

Dr Cristina Psomadakis: for wrinkles and skin quality

What were your main skin concerns?

My main concerns stem from my background and age. I grew up in Greece with a lot of sun exposure. Now, as I enter my 40s, my focus is on maintaining my skin barrier, addressing photo damage, and preventing fine lines, wrinkles, and collagen breakdown. As a dermatologist, I see the full spectrum of skin conditions – from minor cosmetic issues to life-changing, severe diseases. One thing you learn very quickly is that the skin is a visible organ. It’s deeply tied to our mental health, not just our physical wellbeing. Ageing is a privilege – and the signs of it reflect a full life – but it’s not just a cosmetic concern. If your skin is very weak as you get older, it can lead to medical issues too.

How do the bespoke formulas help treat skin concerns like wrinkles?

Klira combines the most medically significant ingredients for treating photoageing and improving skin elasticity and collagen production. I have a master’s degree in skin ageing, so I know that some of the best-proven ingredients, such as tretinoin (for increasing collagen, boosting elasticity, and strengthening the skin) and azelaic acid (for inflammation and pigmentation) are the ones used at Klira. Before, you’d need multiple products to get the same result – and they wouldn’t come in such a beautifully formulated base.

I’m also testament that the Klira Special works. It’s made a tremendous difference to my skin, and I use Klira both as a customer and prescribe it as a doctor. I love that I can tailor the exact ingredients my patients need – and get them the most effective treatments – without wasting money on products that don’t work.

What is your top tip for great skin?

Be patient and be consistent. And if you need help, speak to a dermatologist. The dermatology team at Klira, for example, can tweak your formula and offer support. Ultimately, don’t give up – you will see the results.

Dr Rhonda Meys: for breakouts

What were your main skin concerns?

Intermittent breakouts, often related to hormones, were one of my key concerns. They could be painful and would crop up around my cheeks and nose, lasting at least a week. It was especially difficult because, as a dermatologist, I feel that often we are expected to set the standard when it comes to clear skin. You’re not much of an advert for your skills if you have loads of spots! But our skin can’t always be 100% blemish free (we are human, after all).

Secondly, I had pigmentation and sun spots too – all as a consequence of sun exposure, that resulted in an “uneven skin tone”. As an outdoorsy, active person (runner, walker, cyclist, triathlete) the UV exposure adds up even when being super careful and wearing sunscreen.

How has Klira helped clear your skin?

The Klira actives have not only helped clear my skin from spots; they have also helped even my skin tone [blemishes can often leave long-lasting discolouration behind]. As extra benefits, I love that the product is helping generate collagen in my dermis, my pores are less noticeable and my milia [white hard dots that are common around your eyes] have almost disappeared.

What do you like most about Klira?

I’m into minimal fuss no-maintenance skincare and Klira is so easy to integrate into my routine. Ultimately, Klira is sustainable skincare – just like a healthy lifestyle for skin. It’s the opposite of a crash diet or fad. It’s also a highly achievable regime and if you can stick to it the benefits are undeniable.
