A Family-Friendly Insider Guide To LA With Designer Tyler Ellis

Including beautiful child-friendly beaches and world-famous theme parks, Los Angeles native Tyler Ellis gives Citizen Enfants her insider guide to LA for families.

Los Angeles is a place with so much fun to offer families; accessories designer and mum-of-one Tyler Ellis gives us the inside track on where to stay, eat, and hang out with (and without) little ones in the iconic Californian city she grew up in.

Tell us a bit about yourself

I’m the designer behind my eponymous luxury handbag label, Tyler EllisI was born and raised in the Riviera Palisades area of Los Angeles and, until recently, my husband, our three-and-a-half-year-old son, and I lived in Brentwood. I love LA. It’s where I grew up and created countless cherished memories. The recent Palisades fire has devastated this special place, but I remain hopeful that from this tragedy a renewed community will emerge, one where families can continue to build beautiful new memories. We’ve recently relocated to Florence for a while as we just purchased our factory in Italy, marking an exciting new chapter for the brand and an equally exciting new adventure for our family. But have kept our place in Los Angeles as that will always be home.

When is the best time to visit LA with children?

August is one of my favourite times of year in Los Angeles. With so many people away on holiday, the city feels noticeably calmer. The weather is beautiful, you can get into just about any restaurant without a wait, and even the traffic lightens up. It’s also a great time for families. Navigating the city is much easier, parks and child-friendly museums are less crowded, and there’s a bit more breathing room to enjoy everything LA has to offer. Some of the must-see places with kids are Natural History Museum and the California Science Centre, which will be easier to get around when it’s not so busy.

Which hotels should we check into for a family-friendly stay?

One of my favourite coastal spots is Shutters on the Beach. It’s right on the sand, so children can play while you relax with an ocean view. It is also very near to the Santa Monica Pier, where kids can enjoy games, rides, and plenty of treats.

For something more peaceful, Hotel Bel-Air feels like a hidden retreat. Although it is in the middle of the city, the beautiful gardens and quiet setting make it feel far away. Children love the large swimming pool and visiting the resident swans and their Sunday brunch is always a family highlight.

What are the best beaches to visit with children and why?

There are so many wonderful beaches in LA for families, each offering something a little different. Santa Monica and Venice are probably the most famous. Santa Monica has the iconic pier with games and rides, while Venice is always full of energy, though it’s better for a stroll than a full beach day with young children. Zuma Beach in Malibu is a great option. It’s clean, spacious, and usually less crowded than some of the others. Charlie Beach is a lovely, low-key local favourite with a relaxed vibe and a more hidden setting. Terranea offers a beach club with kid-friendly amenities in a peaceful, upscale environment.

A few tips: pack layers, as the beach can get chilly later in the day, and always check parking ahead of time. If you’re visiting during the summer, arriving earlier helps avoid crowds and ensures a good spot.

Where can we take them to play other than the beach?

One place I’ve always loved is Universal Studios. It sometimes gets overshadowed by Disneyland, but it holds a special place in my heart. I used to go as a kid and have the best memories wandering through the movie sets, watching the behind-the-scenes shows, and riding the Studio Tour tram. It’s incredibly immersive and fun for all ages, with just the right mix of nostalgia and excitement. I’d love to go back. There are so many new attractions now, including the Wizarding World of Harry Potter, which I know is a big hit even if it’s not really my thing. I also love the carnival-style games where you can win prizes. There’s something so simple and satisfying about walking away with a stuffed animal you won yourself. And if you want to make the most of the day, I highly recommend getting a VIP or Express Pass so you can skip the lines. It makes the whole experience so much more enjoyable.

Where should we take kids for breakfast?

Farmshop at the Brentwood Country Mart is a local favourite. The food is fresh and seasonal, and the atmosphere is casual and always full of families. There are a couple of little rides outside for young kids and a charming toy store next door that’s been around for years. It’s a great spot to let them explore after breakfast.

The Café at the Beverly Hills Hotel is also a classic. The retro diner setting is fun for kids and the pancakes are some of the best in LA. It’s a relaxed, welcoming place with a touch of old-school charm that both parents and children enjoy.

The place only local parents know about?

Malibu Country Mart has a charming little playground where kids can run around, dig in the sand, swing, and slide. There is a great selection of shops there too. Right next to it is Tra di Noi, an authentic Italian restaurant with outdoor seating that overlooks the play area, so you can enjoy a relaxed lunch while keeping the kids in full view.

Your favourite family-friendly restaurants?

Amici in Brentwood is always a solid choice. The food is consistently good, the staff is authentically Italian, and they adore little ones. They open early and offer both indoor and outdoor seating. They’re also very accommodating and happy to prepare off-menu requests. Porta Via is another great option. They offer a wholesome yet kid-friendly bento box that’s both delicious and nutritious, perfect for younger palates. And when in LA, you simply must enjoy at least one Mexican meal. Café Habana in Malibu is my favourite. It’s casual with a relaxed, beachy vibe that’s great for kids, and the menu has something for everyone. It’s owned by Cindy Crawford and Rande Gerber, so you might spot them if you’re lucky.

Your favourite places to shop for children in LA?

Poppy Store, located in the Brentwood Country Mart, is a beautifully curated children’s boutique that offers a thoughtful selection of clothing, gifts, and books for all occasions. Known for its timeless aesthetic and European-inspired brands, the store carries pieces that feel both special and long-lasting. They create beautifully assembled gift baskets, perfect for birthdays or welcoming a new baby, and also stock a charming collection of culturally rich children’s books that make story time feel meaningful. The atmosphere is warm and inviting, with sweet touches like the vintage coin-operated car rides just outside. I used to ride them when I was little, and now it’s amazing to watch my son play on those very same machines. While some pieces can be a bit pricey, the quality and uniqueness of the finds make it well worth the visit.

And to shop for yourself?

I love a-DAPTE elixirs, a new LA-based brand devoted to modern self-care. Created by a mother with a deep commitment to holistic wellness, these plant-based blends are infused with functional herbs designed to support and balance your system. They’re delicious on their own or can be mixed with a favourite spirit when you’re in the mood to elevate the evening.

Erewhon is a cult-favourite among LA’s health-conscious crowd, known for its organic produce, thoughtfully sourced products, and nutrient-rich prepared meals. It’s a go-to for wellness enthusiasts and anyone who appreciates high-quality, clean ingredients. My favourite location is in the Palisades, though it hasn’t reopened just yet.

If mums have a few hours sans enfants where should they go?

The spa at the Century Plaza is hands down the best I’ve been to in LA. It offers a full range of wellness experiences including steam, sauna, hammam, salt room, infrared booths, and more. They use top-tier products like Biologique Recherche, 111SKIN, and Ultraceuticals, making every treatment feel incredibly indulgent. The therapists are attentive and truly listen to your needs, creating a deeply relaxing experience. I never want to leave.

Any top tips for visiting LA with children?

It’s worth renting a car. LA is vast and you really do need one to get around comfortably. I’d recommend skipping the Hollywood tourist spots, as the area is a bit rough around the edges and there’s not much to see. If the Lakers are in town, the games are always a fun experience with great energy and even better people watching. And if you’re in the mood for something a little more lighthearted, there are family-friendly tours that take you around the city and point out celebrity homes. How accurate they are, we may never know, but it’s all part of the quintessential LA experience.

Why is LA a wonderful family destination?

Because there is truly something for everyone. The weather is almost always perfect, so kids can spend their days outdoors, whether it’s at the beach, a park, or simply running around in the sunshine. There is also a great balance of clean, healthy food options that still taste amazing. Disneyland is just a drive away and always makes for a fun family day. That said, the city is so spread out it can be hard to know where to begin. Talking to someone who knows the city well can make all the difference, helping you discover places that truly align with your interests and make the most of your time in LA.

The insider names to know?

Concierge MD is a trusted LA service that comes directly to you, whether you’re at home or staying in a hotel. Their vitamin drips are perfect for recovering from jet lag, while the more intense NAD+ therapy is a true local secret for boosting energy, mental clarity, and overall wellness. No membership is required, which makes it ideal for both residents and visitors looking for a discreet, high-end wellness experience.
