Are you a chronic beauty over-packer even when going on a short, weekend trip? Here’s why you should take inspiration from French women’s skincare regimes to break the habit.
Packing skincare for a long weekend away always sounds simpler than it is. You tell yourself you’ll travel light, and then suddenly you’ve got three serums, multiple full-sized moisturisers and something with a pipette leaking into your wash bag.
For my most recent trip (Mallorca, 30 degrees, carry-on only), I decided to try something different. Less stress, fewer skincare steps and, ideally, no emergency trips to the nearest pharmacy. Instead of overthinking what to pack, I looked to the people who seem to get it right every time: French women.
The French approach to skincare has always been considered but uncomplicated. Routines are intentionally stripped back, grounded in consistency and science. They prioritise skin health over trends and rely on a handful of trusted formulas that work.
And, crucially, their travel skincare doesn’t shift depending on destination. It’s the same edit they rely on at home, shaped by years of knowing what works. So, while the rest of us are trialling a new launch or carting around seven-step routines, French women are travelling light and letting their skin speak for itself.

The French way to pack skincare
Rather than impulse-buying sheet masks in Duty Free, French women stick to what’s always worked: cult pharmacy staples like Bioderma Sensibio, Avène Cicalfate and Embryolisse Lait-Crème Concentré. Each one efficient, multi-tasking and born out of the belief that less can be more (if, of course, you know what you’re using and why).
“French beauty has always been less about covering up and more about taking care,” reveals Fabienne Sebaoun, the founder of French beauty brand Mimétique. Newly launched into Space NK, Mimétique perfectly encapsules the skin-first mentality that makes French women so effortlessly chic, both at home and on their travels: all products are under 100ml and are designed to strengthen the skin barrier and streamline your routine.
“Planes, AC, sun, pollution – travel wrecks your skin barrier,” Sebaoun explains. “When it’s weak, you feel it: tightness, breakouts, dullness. That’s why French women stick to routines that support skin instead of overwhelming it.”
The lesson I learned? Edit wisely, pack the essentials and don’t be afraid to skip the extras.

My weekend travel edit
I have sensitive skin that’s prone to perioral dermatitis, so I’m naturally cautious when switching things up. But everything I packed this time (essentially a mix of trusted French icons and newer finds) kept my skin calm, balanced and completely unbothered by a change in routine. Here’s what came with me:
