Back-To-School Shoes: Our Edit Of The Best

There’s a preppy fashion energy this season, which means shoes have taken on a scholarly air. Loafers, which have been building in popularity for the last few years now, have reached their zenith. It’s harder to think of a brand who hasn’t launched a version of this classic than those that have. The timeless ballet pump (still going strong in fashion circles), has given way to the Mary-Jane, an elegant, grown-up alternative. Monk strap shoes are back via Dior and Simone Rocha, which we love paired with skirts and dresses. Here, we round-up our favourite styles to give your new-season look a collegiate finish.

The joy of the loafer is its versatility. Perfect for non-committal weather, they offer a clear route into autumn bringing with it a DOSE OF POLISH TEAMED WITH COMFORT. Loafers make dresses look more interesting, and cropped denim feel more pulled-together. Look out for ruched styles and penny classics, which are current favourites.

If you’re looking for a new-season shoe with height, make a beeline for a pair of Mary-Janes, which are a great way of adding a feminine edge to an outfit. Alternatively, I love the heeled loafers available this season; Arket’s black leather style feels very Prada, and will work as well as in the office as they will for dinner with friends. Ballet pumps are still big news; Hush offers a square-toe pair made of such soft leather that they don’t need to be worn in – a design feat that deserves celebration.
