What To Do With Children This October: Recommendations from the CE Team

This October, the Citizen Enfants team has absolutely filled the calendar with all kinds of fun for the family — from new shows and birthday parties to Halloween costume antics and trips through sunny Sicily.

And with the festive season creeping up, we’re already locking in plans — ballets, weekend getaways, and yes, even choosing which suitcases we’ll be dragging along. Here’s what the Citizen Enfants team of mums has lined up with their kids this month, and why we’re pretty excited about it.

WEAR School runs and busy work schedules means I need shoes that keep me going. These Chloé sneakers have become my favourite. WATCH The Three Little Pigs at Unicorn Theatre. I’m a huge fan of the show they put on, as are my kids. TRAVEL Half-term is looming and I’ll be travelling with 3 kids (for the first time). These organisers will be one essential for the toddlers to fill with whatever they want. BOOK With Halloween coming up, we’re going to try pumpkin picking at Hobbledown Heath for Hobble’ween. VISIT We’re also excited about ZooTown opening up later this month, a new indoor role play adventure. READ I’m very excited to curl up with my daughter and dive back into Enid Blyton’s adventure shorts—it feels like uncovering a treasure chest of childhood memories all over again.

SHOP It’s my son’s 3rd birthday next month, so we’re gearing up for his party. He’s currently very into pirates – a fairly niche interest, but luckily one that Meri Meri caters for in abundance! We’ll be checking out their new pop-up shop in Notting Hill to decorate the local village hall and make a really fun tablescape for all of his friends to enjoy. PLAY Sticking to the theme, we’ll have a Pirate Pete/Polly from Captain Fantastic coming to entertain the kids before a bubble disco. I’ve heard great things and I can’t wait to see my little one’s reaction to it all. WEAR I’m a huge fan of Organic Zoo and they have two gorgeous artist collaborations across their jersey collections, from seascapes from Abigail Edwards to woodland scenes from See You See Me. Perfect cosy autumnal gear – especially when my boy is refusing to wear anything that isn’t super soft or with an elasticated waistband! WATCH We’re booking We’re Going On A Bear Hunt at the Little Angel Theatre in Islington for my son’s first theatre experience, as he really loves the book and listening to the story on his Toniebox.

PLAY These cute little kits from the Play Makers to keep us entertained on dark winter evenings at home. We did the fairy garden box which was so sweet and we love watching the garden grow every day.  BUY The Tin Can – the landline re-invented for kids. Anything to prevent screen time but still encourage connection and communication. I am whole heartedly behind these. STAY We are going to be staying at The Pig near Bath soon and I cannot wait. This is my first stay in a Pig after wanting to go for years so I am excited for a cosy weekend with my children in the country side. PLAN AHEAD Booking Suvretta House for an early Christmas break, one of my all time favourite hotels. So traditional and majestic, I wanted this to be a Christmas to remember and could think of no better place. Perfect spot for the kids to do their first proper skiing with a children’s slope right next to the hotel. TRAVEL My youngest is obsessed with her new Paw Patrol suitcase and very excited for adventures ahead.

VISIT We’re off on our annual trip to Sicily this month to a city we’ve been going to for years called Catania. Sicily is a dreamy place to take children. Our son is treated like a mini celebrity there; we’re constantly stopped by kindly, adoring locals, and – as with many Southern European destinations – children are welcomed late into restaurants and the majority of bars. No one seems to mind if they make noise because it is actually rather difficult to be noisier than a Sicilian man. DO Our son is two-and-a-half, so when we’ve been in Catania previously, he’s been dragged along to our adventures. This year, he very much knows his on mind, so we’ll be taking him to places we know he’ll love, too – the local play parks, the famed fish market and, of course, the beach. The Lido Arcobaleno is our favourite on account of the excellent spaghetti vongole. There’s also a tourist train for children that takes you to the sites of the city, so we’ll add that to the list too. BUY My ultimate hack for flying with small children is to take them to the airport book shop beforehand to let them chose a book. My son loves this rare bit of shopping freedom, and is almost giddy to read it when we get on the plane after which we read the said book 28,948 times. Michael Rosen and Helen Oxenbury, the duo behind the classic story, We’re Going On A Bear Hunt, have recently released a new book, Oh Dear, Look What I’ve Got! so with a bit of luck, I’m hoping to steer him towards that.

WEAR My eight and four-year-old daughters have different styles, but both love the customisable Whatever Sweats; the hoodies are the softest materials. For more dressy days, I’ve just bought them matching tartan dresses from Mini Boden –I know my days of matchy-matchy are limited, so I’m embracing it while I can. For cute flats, my eco-conscious kids love the idea of plastic bottles being turned into party shoes by the brand Rothys. We all have a pair. READ My older kid is absolutely captivated by the fantasy book series Skandar by A.F. Steadman – the latest book is recently out, and the author has a book-signing event in London in November (despite being heavily pregnant). PLAN AHEAD I am sending both girls to Chilli Kids Club for a day in half term – a cool fashion upcycling day camp that teaches kids how to turn unwanted clothes into new threads; they have outposts across London. Beyond that, it’s time to book Christmas shows. I love the magic of the Nutcracker and will be taking my older girl to the Royal Opera House, dressed in finery. While we will go as a family to see The Snowman at Sadler’s Wells, which we’ve loved before. VISIT We love a weekend in the countryside – and are looking forward to a stay in a chic cottage at The Farm at Avebury, where there are tractor rides to the pumpkin farm, a barn dedicated to soft play and animals to pet. Bliss.
