In our newest series, Out Of Office, we get to know the incredible women behind some of our favourite brands and places, chatting about everything from the ins and outs of running a business to where to enjoy those rare days off (and naturally, everything in between). Next up is Alona Shelemy.
For Alona Shelemy, jewellery has always played an influential part of her life, as the daughter of a fine jeweller and now the founder of her fashionable jewellery brand, By Alona. A creative person at heart, Alona worked hard to carve out her own affordable space and cool style within the industry – including the male-dominated Hatton Garden – to create the wonderful brand she has today.
But, it’s not always been easy. Alona was diagnosed with breast cancer a few years ago, and has stayed open about her journey in the hopes of helping others going through similar experiences. From the importance of checking yourself regularly to managing the scary feelings and how to find a support system, Alona chats to Sheena Bhattessa about it all, in honour of Breast Cancer Awareness Month this October.
From the one book Alona would recommend to help stop anyone going through a rough period in their life from spiralling out and the charity we can turn to for support (Future Dreams) to winging it in your twenties and the wonderful travels that inspire Alona’s beautiful designs, we cover all kinds of things over the interview.
Proof that it can all get better.
