The Conscious Citizen: CF's December Sustainable Edit

Welcome to The Conscious Citizen – CF’s monthly spotlight on the most inspiring sustainable collectives paving the way in mindful innovation and impact.

Including a luxury knitwear label that champions small production runs and skilled artisans, a faux flower and interior brand that’s set to make your Christmas more sustainable, and a luxury hotel in the foothills of Dehradun, India – these are a few of the names making a positive change this December.

FASHION

C. VERNOY

Founded by Cat Roberts, C. Vernoy honours the traditions of timeless style while embracing a modern commitment to sustainability. Drawing on her background in finance and a lifelong appreciation for quality, Cat created C. Vernoy to offer women a collection of meticulously crafted pieces made from Italy’s finest materials. Inspired by her mother’s enduring sense of style, she infuses the brand with a reverence for sophistication, individuality, and exceptional workmanship. The debut collection, cV(1), is a celebration of this philosophy. With fewer than 1,000 pieces, each design is thoughtfully constructed in limited quantities, reflecting the precision and passion of Italy’s most skilled artisans.

INTERIORS

THE SUFFOLK NEST

“Investing in high-quality faux foliage is one of the most sustainable choices you can make for the festive season,” explains The Suffolk Nest founder, Ashlee Jane. “Once you have beautifully realistic bases such as wreaths, garlands, trees and core stems, they can be reused year after year without losing their shape, colour or fullness.” Because faux is produced once and can be reused, the carbon footprint over time is far lower than continually replenishing fresh florals that rely on transport, refrigeration and high-intensity growing. It’s also a good way of removing any of the seasonal stress – knowing your arrangements will never wilt, shed or need replacing during silly season is one less thing to tick off the list. “Instead of starting from scratch each Christmas, you can simply reinvent them to suit your décor mood,” Ashlee says, suggesting that, “a classic green wreath can become a rich, traditional scheme with red velvet ribbon and ilex berries one year, then pared-back and minimalist with brass bells and linen bows the next”.

STAY

SIX SENSES VANA

Across the Six Senses group, each property features its own Earth Lab, inviting guests to explore practical ways to tread more lightly; organic kitchen gardens and working farms supply ingredients with near-zero food miles; and practices such as plastic reduction, low-impact construction, and regenerative environmental initiatives are all non-negotiable. Set in the lush foothills of Dehradun, Six Senses Vana in northern India is an escape where wellness, ecology, and spiritual intention are treated with equal reverence. Designed for extended stays, Vana begins with a personalised wellness and nutrition screening, mapping each guest’s needs with almost meditative precision. From here, a bespoke programme unfolds, guided by Ayurveda, Tibetan Medicine, detox therapies, yoga, meditation, and even sleep tracking. Visits from local schoolchildren introduce the next generation to ecological stewardship, while the retreat’s LEED-certified architecture and artworks crafted from reclaimed materials reflect the property’s circular mindset. Beyond its borders, Vana’s partnerships with youth-led NGO Nature’s Buddy and the nearby Hariom Ashram have helped rescue, protect, and shelter thousands of elephants and cows. This is a place that is restorative not only for its guests, but for the land, the wildlife, and the communities that surround it.

BEAUTY

OMALY

Omaly is an Irish brand that draws on centuries‑old coastal wisdom to transform wild, hand‑harvested Atlantic seaweed into mindful, sustainable skincare that’s perfect for gifting. It was inspired by founder Ann‑Marie O’Shea’s grandmother, who first taught her the remarkable skin-boosting properties of seaweed by sharing the stories of her ancestors who gathered it. Every batch is still sustainably foraged along Ireland’s Atlantic coast, timed with the seasons and even the full moon (due to changes in water levels) to protect marine ecosystems. The seaweed is then carefully purity-tested, creating nourishing, collagen-boosting creams and oils that deliver real results without the need for synthetic preservatives. They are housed in recyclable violet iron glass to protect the nutrients inside while reducing plastic waste too. The result is a vegan, cruelty-free brand that cares for the planet, your skin and your mental wellbeing; creating rituals designed to help you slow down while improving your skin’s glow. EAT

CHAPTERS

Tucked into the bookish heart of Hay-on-Wye, Chapters is redefining sustainable dining. Co-owned by Charmaine and Mark McHugo, the restaurant has quietly become one of the UK’s most progressive kitchens and has earned significant acclaim: a coveted Michelin Green Star, proudly retained since 2022, and, most recently, the prestigious three green circles from the international 360°Eat Guide – a distinction shared by only 15 restaurants across the entire country. At the heart of this achievement is the couple’s deeply personal approach to sustainability. Charmaine, who leads front of house with warmth and precision, also tends to the restaurant’s half-acre kitchen garden. An abundant plot that provides much of what appears on the plate, with vegetables, fruit and herbs harvested at their absolute peak, often just hours before they are cooked. In the kitchen, Mark transforms this hyper-seasonal produce into a single set menu that shifts every six weeks, dictated entirely by what the land is offering. His style is homely yet refined: modern British cooking with a deep respect for provenance and simplicity. Preservation techniques, such as pickling, fermenting and curing (jars of which line the walls), are woven throughout the menu, ensuring that nothing from the garden is wasted.
